HAMDEN, Conn. (Apr. 11, 2010) – The Saint Francis softball team scored three early runs, but dropped a heartbreaking 5-4 contest against Quinnipiac in Game 1 of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.
The Bobcats scored two sixth-inning runs, and held the Red Flash scoreless in a 2-0 Game 2.
Saint Francis has now dropped nine straight games to fall to 9-26 on the season. SFU is 1-9 in the Northeast Conference. The Red Flash will try to snap the skid with during a 10-game homestand that begins with a doubleheader at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, versus Canisius.
Junior
Raquel Rugani (Montour, PA/Montour) (McKees Rocks, Pa. / Montour) had an RBI single, and freshman Karlie Miller (Wildomar, Calif. / Temescal Canyon) had a two-run single, in the first inning to spot Saint Francis a 3-0 lead in Game 1. The Bobcats plated a run in the second inning, but senior
Christina Aulbach (York, PA /Dallastown Area) (York, Pa. Dallastown Area) had an RBI single in the fourth inning to give the Red Flash a 4-1 lead.
However, Quinnipiac rallied with two runs in the third and two more in the fifth inning to steal the victory, 5-4.
Rugani and Aulbach had two hits each for the Red Flash, while sophomore
Paige Smith (Saugus, Calif./Valencia) (Saugus, Calif. / Valencia) scored two runs. Sophomore
Megan Layne (Vallejo, Calif./Rodriguez) (Vallejo, Calif. / Rodriguez) pitched a complete game, giving up four earned runs on 10 hits, while striking out four and walking none.
In Game 2, Quinnipiac received all of its production in the sixth inning. A leadoff hit-by-pitch and a bunt single led to both runs.
Rugani had two hits in the game, and freshman Carmen Gurrola (Arleta, Calif. / John F. Kennedy) went the distance, giving up two runs on three hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
