LORETTO, Pa. (May 7, 2010) – Mount St. Mary's scored seven runs in the first three innings and never looked back in spoiling the Saint Francis softball team's Senior Day and season finale with a 10-3 outcome on Friday afternoon.
The Red Flash end their 2010 campaign with a 14-36 overall record, and a 5-14 mark in the Northeast Conference.
After falling behind 7-0, SFU rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Senior Stephanie Griffin (Dupont, PA /Pittston Area ) (Dupont, Pa. / Pittston Area) drew a walk and scored on a double by freshman Taylor Darneille (Fircrest, Wash. / Wilson). Darneille moved to third base on a groundout and scored when sophomore Paige Smith (Saugus, Calif./Valencia) (Saugus, Calif. / Valencia) reached on an error. Smith went to second base on a walk by senior Christina Aulbach (York, PA /Dallastown Area) (York, Pa. / Dallastown Area), moved to third on a force out at second, and then scored on a double steal to make it 7-3.
Taylor Beebe hit a 3-run opposite field home run in the top of the seventh inning to put the game out of reach.
Saint Francis honored its four seniors prior to the game's first pitch. Aulbach, Ashley Bellmont (Morrisville, PA/Notre Dame (N.J.) ) (Morrisville, Pa. / Notre Dame), Kelly Cortese (Coatesville, PA/Bishop Shanahan) (Coatesville, Pa. / Bishop Shanahan) and Griffin all played in their last game's in a Red Flash uniform.
Cortese and sophomore Katie McMellen (Kingsville, OH /Edgewood) (Kingsville, Ohio / Edgewood) each had a base hit in the game for Saint Francis.
Game 2 of the scheduled doubleheader was canceled due to impending darkness.
