Red Flash Swept By Lamar In First Match At Cornell Invitational

ITHACA, N.Y. (Sept. 3, 2010) - Sophomore Lauren Wingard (York, Pa./Dallastown Area) (York, Pa./Dallastown) had her streak of three consecutive matches with double-digit kills snapped, and the Saint Francis women's volleyball team fell in their first match at the Cornell Invitational, losing 3-0 (18-25, 15-25, 15-25) to the Lamar Cardinals on Friday.

The Red Flash fall to 1-3 overall this season.  They will continue their stay in Ithaca to take on the hosting Cornell Big Red and the Siena Saints at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., respectively, on Saturday.

The Cardinals were firing on all cylinders right out of the chute, as they jumped to a 12-5 lead in the first set and forced Red Flash head coach Chuck Mullen to call his first timeout.  Lamar hit a robust .261 in the first set, in comparison to just .069 for SFU.  The lead in the first set would grow to as large as 10 points, but the Red Flash were able to slightly close the gap with some solid play late in the set. They would get as close as six points on a Leeanne Haus (Mars, Pa./North Allegheny) (Mars, Pa./North Allegheny) kill, but the Cardinals would put the set away one point later.

The second set would start out better than the first for the Red Flash, but unfortunately the ultimate result was the same.  The teams were evenly matched at first, with SFU taking a brief 4-2 lead on an Amanda Zahumensky (Sarver, Pa./Freeport Area) (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) ace and a Lindsay Malloy (Gallitzin, Pa./Penn Cambria) (Gallitzin, Pa./Penn Cambria) / Lizzy Williams (North Bend, Ohio/Saint Ursula)  combo block.  Lamar would respond with an 8-4, though, and proceeded to run away with the second set.  The Red Flash hit a dismal -.042 in the second set.

The Cardinals nearly went coast-to-coast in the third set, taking the lead on the first point and allowing only a 1-1 tie score before finishing off the match.

Wingard led the Red Flash with just eight kills; however, she recorded them on just 13 swings with one error for a .538 hitting percentage.
