Seasoned Navy squad too much for short-handed Flash

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (Jan. 22, 2011) – With only five players active, the Saint Francis University women's team was dealt a tough, 6-1, loss at the hands of a veteran Navy squad at the Tose Family Tennis Complex on Saturday morning.

"This whole season for the women's team is really about gaining experience," said head coach Paul Tobin. "We're playing a challenging schedule but this will prepare us for our conference championships in April."

Saint Francis' only win came from Tina Miller at no. 5 singles. Miller overpowered Navy newcomer Cassi Kovac 6-1, 6-0.

"This was a big win for Tina," said Tobin. "She has been struggling all last year with injuries and hasn't been able to practice much. For her to come out and provide such an impressive show makes me very optimistic."

Action started with Miller and Devynn Sarver (Mt. Clemens, Mich./Fraser) at no. 1 doubles taking on Navy's Djuti Das and Haley Adams. Despite an 8-1 score, the SFU women were able to play solid doubles.

At no. 2 doubles, Alex Foty (Oakville, Ontario/Niagara Academy of Tennis) and Laura Husband (Dawson, Pa./Connellsville Area) came out with some impressive shot selections and were able to save several breaks but, in the end, the Midshipmen closed out Red Flash 8-4.

With the exception of Miller, the remainder of SFU's singles competitor went down in straight sets.

The Red Flash women return to action on Wednesday when they welcome Pittsburgh to the Ebensburg Tennis Center for a 6 p.m. match.
