LORETTO, Pa. (Oct. 8, 2011) – The Saint Francis University women's volleyball team dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 decision (17-25, 25-21, 25-21, 21-25, 13-15) Saturday afternoon at DeGol Arena to Northeast Conference foe Central Connecticut State.
After dropping the opening set, the Red Flash (6-14, 1-4) made a charge to take the next two sets from the visiting Blue Devils (11-7, 3-2) by identical scores. In the second set, CCSU picked up eight consecutive points to give them a 20-15 lead late before Saint Francis put up eight points of its own to take the lead. Thanks to an attack error by the Blue Devils and a final kill by junior
Lauren Wingard (York, Pa./Dallastown Area), the Red Flash recorded the final two points of the set to pull the match even at one.
Set number three produced a back and forth struggle between both teams as neither could grab a lead and run with it. Saint Francis scored four of the last six points in the set, including the final kill by junior
Elizabeth Williams (North Bend, Ohio/Saint Ursula), to put them up two sets to one heading into the fourth set.
With the Flash looking to close out the match, CCSU built up a 24-17 lead late in the fourth set and needed just one more point to earn the set win. SFU registered four points in a row to set up the comeback effort but it would not be enough to overtake the Blue Devils in the set, and the match went to a final fifth set.
Late in the final set, the two squads tied the set at 13, before CCSU put down the final two kills they would need to earn the set and match win.
Four Saint Francis players reached double digits in kills and three registered the double digit mark in digs. Junior
Amanda Zahumensky (Sarver, Pa./Freeport Area) and sophomore
Breanna Kochinsky (Nicktown, Pa./Northern Cambria) both notched their third double-doubles this season in kills and digs. Zahumensky picked up a team-high 17 kills and added 12 digs as well. Kochinsky on the other hand, reached 12 kills and a team and career-high 24 digs. Starting libero
Brittany Stambaugh (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) recorded her second-highest dig total of the season in the match with 19.
Wingard tied Zahumensky's mark in kills by putting down 17, a season-high for her, and a .419 attack percentage. Williams rounds out the list of Flash players to reach double digits in kills by picking up 16, and added five blocks. Fellow junior
Kierstin Kiser (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) posted a season-high of her own also by tacking on 51 assists against the Blue Devils.
