LORETTO, Pa. (Nov. 13, 2011) – Playing in its final game of the 2011 season, the Saint Francis University women's volleyball team ended on a positive note, taking down Quinnipiac in straight sets (25-15, 25-20, 25-21).
In the opening set, the Red Flash (10-21, 5-11) started with a quick start, grabbing the first three points of the set. Quinnipiac (4-25, 3-12) fought its way back though, taking its first lead of the set at 8-7. Saint Francis went on a run of its own at the midway mark, stringing together four consecutive points. Following a Bobcats timeout, SFU held a 17-12 advantage. Saint Francis allowed just three more QU points to claim the first set win.
The Red Flash never trailed in the second set and built up a 16-9 lead before a Quinnipiac timeout. It took some time though to put the Bobcats away as they came within two with the score 17-15. As the second set neared its end, QU pulled the set to 24-20 before sophomore
Breanna Kochinsky (Nicktown, Pa./Northern Cambria) fired a service ace to give SFU the set win and put them up 2-0 in the match.
With the third set tied at 7 apiece, the Flash went on a four-point scoring run. QU found their game halfway through the set and regained a tie with the Flash at 16 all. Quinnipiac then took its first lead of the set at 18-17. Tied at 20, the Flash put down five of the last six points scored to give them the set and match win.
Kochinsky led the way for the Flash, picking up her eighth double-double of the season by way of 12 kills and 12 digs, a .391 attack percentage. Junior
Elizabeth Williams (North Bend, Ohio/Saint Ursula) was the only other SFU player to notch double figures in kills with her 11 kill total. Williams also registered three service aces on the day and two blocks. The setter combination of
Kierstin Kiser (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) and
Logan Meinert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) produced 32 assists, 18 for Meinert and 14 for Kiser.
Saint Francis finishes the 2011 season in seventh place in the Northeast Conference standings.
