Red Flash Split on Final Day at Spartan Clash

NORFOLK, Va.  (Mar. 3, 2011) – Pitching continued to rule for the Saint Francis softball team as the Red Flash handed Marist a 2-0 defeat before dropping a 1-0 contest against Delaware on Sunday afternoon at the Norfolk State Spartan Clash.
 
The Red Flash finished the tournament with a 3-1 record, surrendering just one run all weekend.
 
SFU moved its record to 6-16 on the season, and will return to action when it plays in the ninth annual UMBC Spring Classic next weekend.
 
Junior Megan Layne (Vallejo, Calif./Rodriguez) surrendered just two hits while striking out seven and walking three in a 2-0 victory over Marist. It marked Saint Francis' third straight shutout to start the weekend.
 
The Red Flash scored one run in the second on an RBI single by sophomore Karlie Miller, and junior Paige Smith (Saugus, Calif./Valencia) plated an insurance run with an RBI single in the fifth inning.
 
Sophomore Brianna Garcia was 2-for-3 in the game, while five other players had one hit each for SFU. Freshman Jasa Mitchell was 1-for-3 with a run scored and a walk, and junior Kaitlin Andler was 1-for-2 with a walk.
 
The Blue Hens finally broke through with a run in the second inning to end Saint Francis' scoreless innings pitched streak at 23.2 innings.
 
SFU had four different players with a hit, but couldn't get the equalizer against Kathleen Conway. The Red Flash stranded the tying run at second base to end the game. Junior Katie McMellen (Kingsville, OH /Edgewood) and Smith both had a single and walk for Saint Francis.
