BALTIMORE, Md. (Mar. 20, 2011) – The Saint Francis softball team scored two first inning runs and junior pitcher
Megan Layne (Vallejo, Calif./Rodriguez) made them hold up in a 2-1 victory over Morgan State on Sunday at the UMBC Spring Classic.
Layne gave up just one run on three hits and struck out eight and walked one in 7.0 innings to pick up the win.
The Red Flash improved to 7-19 with the win and will return to action with their Northeast Conference opener at 1 p.m. next Saturday at Bryant.
Junior
Katie McMellen (Kingsville, OH /Edgewood) put the Saint Francis offense in motion with a triple to leadoff the game. Sophomore Brianna Garcia plated her with an RBI single, stole second and eventually scored on a groundout by junior Kaitlin Andler.
The Bears scraped together a run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Layne retired them in order in the seventh to secure the win.
Five different Red Flash players combined for five hits. Andler, junior
Courtney Francis (Jefferson, Ohio/Jefferson Area) and freshman Chelsy Cosentino also contributed singles. Sophomore Taylor Darneille also reached on a hit by pitch.
