Red Flash Split on First Day at Florida Gulf Coast

FORT MYERS, Fla.  (Mar. 4, 2011) – Sophomore Karlie Miller had two hits and four RBIs to lead the Saint Francis softball team to a 13-5 victory over Dartmouth on Friday morning at the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament.
                                                   
However, the tournament host Eagles handed the Red Flash a 9-1 defeat later in the afternoon.
 
Freshman Jasa Mitchell went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while SFU pounded out a season-high 14 hits in the win over Dartmouth.
 
The Red Flash broke open a 7-2 game with six runs in the top of the sixth inning. The Big Green scored three runs in the bottom of the inning, but SFU thwarted the comeback attempt for its third win of the season.
 
Katie McMellen (Kingsville, OH /Edgewood), Paige Smith (Saugus, Calif./Valencia), Chelsy Cosentino and Miller had two hits each. Megan Layne (Vallejo, Calif./Rodriguez) picked up the win with 5.0 innings of work.
 
Florida Gulf Coast jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the nightcap and held the Red Flash to three hits. Heather Stiglich had an RBI single to get Saint Francis on the board in the fourth inning. Mitchell and Courtney Francis (Jefferson, Ohio/Jefferson Area) also had singles for the Red Flash.
