MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (April 2, 2011) -- The Red Flash women's tennis team turned in its second Northeast Conference victory in as many days on Saturday by downing Wagner College, 5-1, in a neutral site match at the Lakeview Tennis Center.
“Our women competed very well today,” said SFU head coach Paul Tobin. “With the lack of consistency we've had on our roster this season, I am excited to see the scores so strong. This is their second win in a row and puts them 2-1 in conference play.”
“If they can pull off a win against a strong Robert Morris team this Sunday we will be in a good position come our conference championships.”
After sweeping doubles play by default,
Devynn Sarver (Mt. Clemens, Mich./Fraser) clinched the team win with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles.
Alex Foty (Oakville, Ontario/Niagara Academy of Tennis),
Laura Husband (Dawson, Pa./Connellsville Area),
Beza Dejene (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia/Lycee Franco-Ethiopien Guebre Mariam) and Abigail Derby all boarded the win train in singles competition before it was derailed at the No. 6 spot. The Nos. 1-5 spots were all decided in straight sets, with the closest set falling at a three point differential.
“This is going to be the last season matches before conference play,” said Tobin. “I know our women are excited for Sunday. They have been working hard to get to this point.”
