BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Sept. 24, 2011)
- The Saint Francis University women's volleyball team opened up Northeast Conference play with a straight sets road victory over St. Francis (N.Y.) Saturday afternoon (25-22, 25-18-25-19).

“Opening with a road conference win is great,” head coach Chuck Mullen said. “Overall I was pleased with today. We had a lot of chances to play aggressively on our side and the team took advantage of that. We have a strong test ahead of us tomorrow but we'll enjoy this one today."

The Red Flash (6-10, 1-0) held a six-point advantage near the end of the opening set until a couple of errors allowed the Terriers (1-15, 0-1) to pull within two points. With one more point needed to wrap up the first set, junior Elizabeth Williams (North Bend, Ohio/Saint Ursula) put down the final kill of the opening set to give SFU a one set to none lead.

In the remaining two sets, Saint Francis pulled away from the Terriers as the sets reached the halfway points, and gained comfortable leads to close out the match.

Offensively, the Red Flash got strong performances from three key producers in juniors Lauren Wingard (York, Pa./Dallastown Area), Amanda Zahumensky (Sarver, Pa./Freeport Area) and Williams. Wingard and Williams both reached double digits in kills with 10, Wingard's eighth game this season in reaching double digits and Williams' sixth. Zahumensky recorded a team-high 11 kills and added 10 digs on top of that for her second double-double of the season.

Sophomore Breanna Kochinsky (Nicktown, Pa./Northern Cambria) came just two kills shy of reaching her third double-double of the year as she registered eight kills and a team-high 13 digs. Classmate Logan Meinert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) dished out 34 total assists in the game, her sixth over-30 assist performance of the season. Wingard, along with freshman Kayla Jeckell (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood), each notched three service aces on the day.

Saint Francis continues its New York road trip tomorrow when they square off with Long Island at 1 p.m.
