BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Sept. 25, 2011) – The Saint Francis University women's volleyball team dropped a Northeast Conference battle Sunday afternoon in straight sets to Long Island (19-25, 9-25, 19-25).
"Today was highly disappointing,” head coach Chuck Mullen said. “We didn't rise up to the challenge and it doesn't get any easier from here as we have an even bigger test this week with Robert Morris. We have to do a better job of progressing without regressing."
The Red Flash (6-11, 1-1) fell behind early in the first set as the Blackbirds (6-10, 1-1) opened up a 13-5 lead. Saint Francis would capitalize on its chances however, and grabbed the next 11 of 15 points scored, to pull them within one. LIU made a run of its own as the opening set neared its end, and took the victory to put them ahead in the match.
The second set was all Blackbirds as the Red Flash could not stop the LIU attack, and only managed five kills of its own.
SFU played a much stronger third set and gained an 11-7 lead halfway through. Long Island fought its way back in the set to tie it at 14, and eventually began to pull away from Saint Francis to grab the set and match win.
Junior
Elizabeth Williams (North Bend, Ohio/Saint Ursula) recorded six kills in the match to lead the team, while libero
Brittany Stambaugh (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) posted a team-high 11 digs.
Saint Francis continues NEC action Wednesday night Sept. 28 when they travel to Moon Twp., Pa. for a battle with in-state rival Robert Morris at 7 p.m.
