LORETTO, Pa. (Sept. 27, 2011) – A day after competing in his second-ever collegiate event, Saint Francis University freshman
Sergio Carvajal (Nueva Esparta, Venezuela/U.E. Fray Elias Maria Sendra) has been named the Northeast Conference Men's Tennis Rookie of the Month for September.
Carvajal began his collegiate career with five singles wins in eight matches, including a 3-1 showing at the Bucknell Invitational, where he advanced to the Flight B final. The Venezuela native also teamed with
Andres Rosa (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Colegio la Piedad) to win the Flight A backdraw doubles crown, earning three straight victories following an opening round setback. This past weekend, Carvajal returned to the court and posted a 2-2 mark at the USTA Invitational, falling in the Flight H West backdraw final.
“I am not too surprised that Sergio was named NEC Rookie of the Month,” said SFU head coach Paul Tobin. “His record at both Bucknell and the US Open Invitational were extremely impressive for a freshman competing for the first time at the Division I level. I am very proud of Sergio, as well as all our entire men's team, which has competed so well during the last two competitions.”
The Red Flash wraps up its fall slate by taking part in the Lehigh Invitational on Oct. 15-16.
