MOON TWP., Pa. (Sept. 28, 2011) – The Saint Francis University women's volleyball team suffered its second conference loss in a row Wednesday evening, falling in straight sets (22-25, 20-25, 14-25) to in-state rival Robert Morris.
“We had a few moments of brilliance, but clearly we didn't have enough of them tonight,” head coach Chuck Mullen said. “I liked our ability to come back in the first set and maintain competitiveness into the second set. We just had a breakdown in the third set and couldn't sustain any momentum.”
In both the first and third sets, the Red Flash (6-12, 1-2) got off to slow starts, trailing the Colonials (7-10, 3-0) by a 14-5 margin halfway through. Saint Francis made a solid comeback attempt in the first set however, pulling the set even at 20 as it neared its end. A combination of miscues and Robert Morris kills, led the Colonials to the victory.
The Red Flash could not seem to gain any kind of momentum throughout the course of the match. In total, SFU committed 26 errors between attack, serving and blocking.
Juniors
Amanda Zahumensky (Sarver, Pa./Freeport Area) and
Elizabeth Williams (North Bend, Ohio/Saint Ursula) tallied seven kills apiece to lead the team offensively. Sophomore setter
Logan Meinert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) notched 25 assists in the loss. Zahumensky led the defensive charge as well, accumulating a team-high seven digs.
Saint Francis returns to the court this Sunday Oct. 2 when they host Fairleigh Dickinson at DeGol Arena at 1 p.m. to continue NEC action.
