BOX SCORE LORETTO, Pa. (Oct. 26, 2012) – The Saint Francis U women's volleyball team fell to Central Connecticut State in four sets on Friday afternoon (24-26, 26-24, 20-25, 20-25).
Behind the solid play of
Elizabeth Williams (North Bend, Ohio/Saint Ursula) and
Lauren Wingard (York, Pa./Dallastown Area), SFU (10-13, 6-4) was able to keep pace with the Blue Devils (15-11, 10-2) in every set.
CCSU owned a 5-2 lead in the first set, but Saint Francis competed and held a lead of their own at 12-9.
Lauren Wingard (York, Pa./Dallastown Area) had two consecutive kills and SFU led 22-20. The Blue Devils needed overtime to close out the first frame.
SFU jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the second set and they did not allow the Blue Devils to muster a comeback.
In the third set, SFU held a 16-14 lead after a kill by
Elizabeth Williams (North Bend, Ohio/Saint Ursula). CCSU went on to score 11 of the next 15 points to take the third frame.
The Blue Devils took a commanding 16-7 lead in the fourth set, but Saint Francis mustered an impressive comeback to take the score to within three at 23-20. After a service error CCSU notched another kill to take the fourth frame.
"We knew this was going to be challenge going into this match and Central Connecticut rose up to it and unfortunately we didn't," head coach Chuck Mullen said. "I was pleased with our defensive effort, we just lacked a competitive edge and an ability to receive serves with any kind of consistency."
Elizabeth Williams (North Bend, Ohio/Saint Ursula) finished with 17 kills and has an impressive .640 hitting percentage.
Lauren Wingard (York, Pa./Dallastown Area) registered 14 kills and 12 digs in a double-double effort.
Amanda Zahumensky (Sarver, Pa./Freeport Area) also registered 14 kills and notched two service aces.
Kayla Jeckell (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) had 11 kills to go along with nine digs.
Kierstin Kiser (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) finished with 43 assists and 10 digs in the match.
Saint Francis returns to action tomorrow afternoon as they continue their five-match home stand against Quinnipiac at 1 p.m.
