Saint Francis Falls in a Tight Road Contest at Colgate, 67-62

BOX SCORE HAMILTON, NY (Dec. 8, 2012) – The Saint Francis University women's basketball team fell on the road in a tight road contest Wednesday against Colgate, 67-62.

After being fouled on a 3-point attempt, Alexa Hayward (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) stepped to the free throw line with SFU down by three points and six seconds remaining in regulation but the sophomore missed her first two attempts and the Red Flash (4-4, 0-0) fell for the third consecutive game. The Raiders (4-5, 0-0) connected on 10 3-pointers and got 19-points off the bench from Catherine Lewis to give SFU, its fourth loss in five games. Alli Williams (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) led the Red Flash with 18 points and 13 rebounds but it was not enough for the junior to lead SFU to a win.

The Red Flash rallied from down eight with 7:28 remaining to tie the contest at 58 with less than two minutes remaining, but on the Raiders picked up a three-point play from Josie Stockill with 1:20 remaining and never looked back. Shene Fleming (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne) went to the free throw stripe on the next SFU possession and split the pair. Following the miss on the second attempt, Nickia Gibbs (Greenbelt, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) got the rebound and had a layup opportunity to tie the game but the senior missed. The Raiders added another score before sending Hayward to the free throw line.

Colgate did an excellent job from behind the 3-point line in the first half with seven makes, against a Red Flash 3-point defense that entered the week ranked 17th nationally. The Raiders shot 53.8-percent from behind the arc in the first half, but the Raiders needed a 3-pointer just before the half to take a 35-33 lead into intermission. Williams, who missed a large part of the second half against Duquesne, led the Flash in the first half with 10 points.

The Red Flash have an 11 day break before returning to action Dec. 19 at the Wright State Tournament against Florida A&M.
