FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 10, 2012) – On the final day of its spring trip, the Saint Francis University softball team did what it had done all week, split a pair of contests, Saturday against Georgetown and Colgate.
Against Georgetown (8-14) the Red Flash (6-7) earned its second shutout of the season by downing the Hoyas 1-0. The contest went three scoreless innings until SFU tacked on its only run in the top of inning four.
Kaitlin Andler (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) led the frame off with a walk and moved over one base thanks to a single to center by
Chelsy Cosentino (New Kensington, Pa./Kiski Area). After a fielder's choice put runners on the corners,
Hannah Francis (Jefferson, Ohio/Jefferson Area) roped an RBI single to right field that scored Andler and put Saint Francis on top by one.
Brooke Koch (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) (1-0) got her first start in the circle versus the Hoyas and earned her first pitching decision of the season after tossing all seven innings of three hit shutout ball. Of SFU's six hits produced in the game, all were scattered throughout six different batters.
In a defensive battle with Colgate (1-4), the Raiders would be the ones who would end up on top 1-0. A scoreless seven innings by both teams sent the game into extra frames where Colgate tallied its lone run in the top of the eighth. Saint Francis had a chance to tie things up in the bottom portion of the inning with a runner on third with just one out. A line out and groundout to third though did the Flash in and gave the Raiders the victory.
Chelsea Rex was handed the loss despite a fine outing. The current Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week threw all eight innings and let up eight hits while striking out six. Rex was not charged with the game winning run. Offensively, the Flash had just four hits, all by different players.
Saint Francis returns up north for five games at the UMBC Spring Classic beginning next Thursday March 15 at 1:55 p.m. against host UMBC.
