Flash drop two close games at Robert Morris

Game One Box Score
Game Two Box Score

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (April 7, 2012)
– A few error plagued innings were the difference for the Saint Francis University softball team as they dropped a pair of Northeast Conference games to in-state rival Robert Morris, 5-3 in game one and 3-1 in game two.

It was the Red Flash (14-18, 4-6 NEC) who struck first in the opening game against the Colonials (21-15, 7-3 NEC) thanks to a two-run shot to dead center by Davina Kachnovitz in the top of the third. Robert Morris cut the lead in half in their at-bat in the third when a bases loaded single through the left side plated one run. RMU then took a one run lead in the fourth after the leadoff batter reached on an error and two runs eventually scored on two RBI singles to center.

Saint Francis wasn't done though as they evened the score 3-3 in the top of the fifth. Taylor Darneille (Fircrest, Wash./Wilson) led off with an infield single to the shortstop and advanced into scoring position on a successful sacrifice bunt by Chelsy Cosentino (New Kensington, Pa./Kiski Area). With two outs in the inning, Brianna Garcia (Riverside, Calif./Arlington) placed a single out in left field which scored Darneille from second. Robert Morris did what they had to though in their half of the sixth, taking a 5-3 lead on three hits and that is where the first game would finish.

Brooke Koch (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) fell to 6-3 on the year, taking the loss after throwing 5.1 innings but surrendered just two earned runs on 11 hits. The Flash collected five hits in the opener, all from different members of the team.

RMU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after one inning of play as the second game of the doubleheader got underway. The Colonials plated both runs on three hits and one Red Flash error in the first. Saint Francis tallied its only run of the contest in the next half inning when a bloop single to right field by Cosentino scored Chelsea Rex. Robert Morris recorded one more run in the game, in the third inning, making the score 3-1 after three and half innings of scoreless ball were then played.

Rex took the loss in the circle and fell to 4-8 after giving up one earned run on five hits. SFU had four total errors between the two games, three of which came in game two.

Saint Francis returns home for a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday at 3 p.m. against visiting Akron.
