LORETTO, Pa. (May 23, 2012) – Saint Francis University head men's basketball coach
Rob Krimmel announced the completion of his coaching staff Wednesday.
Krimmel announced the hiring of assistant coaches
Eric Taylor and Joey Goodson as well as the promotion of Chris Clark to associate head coach. Both Taylor and Goodson are graduates of Saint Francis while Clark will be entering his fourth season as a member of the Red Flash coaching staff. Chuck Gill will also return to the Saint Francis staff as the director of basketball operations.
“One of the most important things to me in putting this staff together was to bring people in who have a passion for Saint Francis and the game of basketball,” Krimmel said. “It was also important to me to make sure that the coaches on the staff had a very high character. I believe whole heartedly that the coaches on this staff will help make our student-athletes better on the court, in the classroom and in the community.”
Clark, who played under legendary coaches John Chaney, Fran Dunphy and Speedy Morris, has been instrumental not only with player development but also to game planning. Under his direction in 2010-11,
Umar Shannon (Atlantic City, N.J./Atlantic City) earned second-team All-Northeast Conference honors. In 2011-12, Clark helped groom Kameron Ritter from a reserve forward into the team's starting point guard, as Ritter posted 69 assists in final 20 games after just three helpers in the first nine games for the Flash. Clark has been extremely active in the community. He has been a Big Brother Program volunteer and a 'Reading for Children' volunteer. Additionally, Clark has volunteered with Midtown Parish United Methodist Church, Ebensburg PotatoFest, the Alzheimer Charity Walk and Cherry Hill's Martin Luther King Day.
“Coach Clark is the perfect mentor for our student-athletes not just on the floor but off the court as well,” Krimmel said. “Coach Clark's work ethic, commitment and respect for the game of basketball is remarkable and I think he will continue to be a great part of what we are working to achieve.”
Goodson graduated from Saint Francis in 2005 after helping the Red Flash to three-consecutive trips to the Northeast Conference Tournament (2002-05). Following his time as a player, he served on the SFU coaching staff from 2005-08 under then-head coach Bobby Jones and with current head coach (then an assistant)
Rob Krimmel. Following the 2007-08 season, Goodson, a four-year captain of the Red Flash, accepted a job as the top assistant at division II Missouri University of Science and Technology under head coach Jim Glash. In 2011-12 with the Miners, Goodson, the Preseason NEC Defensive Player of the Year in 2004-05, helped Missouri S&T upset then-No.2 ranked Southern Indiana while also helping guard Carlton Westbrook earn a spot on Great Lakes Valley Conference defensive team.
“Coach Goodson's energy and enthusiasm will be key not only with the players but for the program as a whole,” Krimmel said. “He not only adds a high character personality to the program but he also brings a defensive mentality and a commitment to defense that I want our program to have.”
Goodson, a native of Reston, Va., averaged 6.1 points and 2.5 rebounds during his senior season with the Red Flash. He earned his bachelor's degree in marketing in 2005 before joining the university's coaching staff. Goodson played his prep basketball at Gonzaga College High School, where he was also a team captain and named one of the top five players in the Washington, D.C. area by Lindy's Basketball magazine for the 2000-01 season.
Taylor returns to Loretto after spending a majority of the past decade outside of the United States as both a player and a coach. After graduating from Saint Francis in 1998, Taylor played basketball professionally in the United States but mainly abroad for 10 seasons before joining the coaching ranks. Most recently, Taylor has been working with Activate Sports International, a sports agency and consulting firm based in Bonn, Germany that helps international players play in the United States and American players play in Germany and worldwide.
“You don't need to look any further than the Saint Francis record book to know what Coach Taylor brings to the table and why I thought we needed him back in Loretto,” Krimmel said. “Coach Taylor knows what it takes to have success in the game of basketball and in the game of life. He will be a great person for our players to learn from both on and off the court.”
Taylor stands as one of the greats in Saint Francis basketball history and still sits 19th all-time in the SFU record book in scoring and fourth all-time at SFU in rebounds behind Jim McClellan, Larry Lewis and Hall of Famer Maurice Stokes. Taylor remains the only player in school history to lead the Red Flash in rebounding in all four of his seasons (rebounding statistics were not kept until 1952-53 season). Taylor and Devin Sweetney are the only two Red Flash players in the last 16 seasons to lead SFU in scoring and rebounding in back-to-back seasons, a feat
Scott Eatherton (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) has a chance to match in 2012-13.
