Saint Francis Adds Dorsett to Football Staff

LORETTO, Pa. (July 3, 2012) – The Saint Francis University football team and head coach Chris Villarrial announced the addition of Sam Dorsett to the football staff.

“Sam is a great addition to our staff,” head coach Chris Villarrial said. “He remains one of the best running backs in conference history and he has proven himself as a coach developing great running backs at Robert Morris.”

Dorsett will work mainly with the SFU running backs and becomes the third former Colonial player on the staff at Saint Francis joining Jake Nulph and Colyn Haugh. The Red Flash also recently hired Scott Benzel as their defensive coordinator after he had spent the pervious nine seasons on the Colonials' staff. Dorsett's hiring comes after Brian White left the program due to personal reasons.

Dorsett spent five seasons on the Robert Morris coaching staff after playing four seasons for the Colonials and rewriting their rushing record book. In addition to his duties as an assistant football coach, the 2011-12 academic year marked Dorsett's second as an assistant with the RMU student services department, overseeing the football program and other various sports.

As an assistant coach with the Colonials, Dorsett was instrumental in the development of running back Myles Russ, who became the program's all-time leading rusher in 2010.

Russ finished his career with 4,271 career rushing yards and broke Dorsett's record with a six-yard touchdown run in a 34-11 victory against Duquesne at Joe Walton Stadium Oct. 30, 2010.

In May of 2010, Dorsett was one of 25 minority coaches from across the country picked to take part in the annual NCAA Football Coaches Academy in Indianapolis, Ind. The academy assists ethnic minority football coaches with career advancement through skills enhancement and exposure opportunities.

A 2003 graduate of RMU with a Bachelor of Science degree in management, Dorsett earned a Master of Science degree in communications and information systems in 2009 after spending the 2007 and 2008 seasons as a graduate assistant coach with the program.

Dorsett stood as RMU's all-time leading rusher for over seven years and finished his career with 3,847 rushing yards on 724 carries, an average of 5.3 yards per carry. He owns RMU career school records for rushing touchdowns (29) and 100-yard rushing games (19) while ranking second to Russ in all-purpose yards (4,255).

A three-time All-Northeast Conference selection (2000, 2001, 2003), when Dorsett rushed for 100 yards in a game, RMU posted a record of 17-2. In addition to his All-NEC accolades, Dorsett was a three-time I-AA Mid-Major All-American according to Don Hansen's National Football Weekly Gazette and was a member of the 2001 I-AA Mid-Major All-America Team according to The Sports Network.

In the fall of 2009, Dorsett was enshrined in the Robert Morris Athletic Hall of Fame, becoming the ninth player in school history from the football program to garner the honor.
