BOX SCORE 2 MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (August 25, 2012) – The Saint Francis University women's volleyball team lost two matches at the final day of the Mountaineer Invitational on Saturday.
In the first contest, the Red Flash (1-1) fell to Loyola University (2-0) (Md.) in four sets 18-25, 25-12, 19-25, 10-25.
Saint Francis battled throughout, in the second set down 1-4, the Red Flash scored seven of the next eight points to lead 11-5. SFU never looked backed, dominating the set 25-12.
SFU lost a tough third set, which they were leading 8-6 in the early stages. The Red Flash responded in the fourth set when they got out to a quick 4-1 lead. The Greyhounds fired back as they scored 24 of the next 30 points.
Junior outside hitter
Breanna Kochinsky (Nicktown, Pa./Northern Cambria) had a team-high seven kills, Seniors
Elizabeth Williams (North Bend, Ohio/Saint Ursula) and
Amanda Zahumensky (Sarver, Pa./Freeport Area) each contributed with six kills apiece.
Junior libero
Brittany Stambaugh (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) paced SFU with 19 digs in the match, senior setter
Kierstin Kiser (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) had a team-high 17 assists.
In the second match, Saint Francis (1-2) lost to Northeast Conference (NEC) rival Central Connecticut State (1-2), again, in four sets (25-18, 19-25, 22-25, 22-25).
The Red Flash got out to a commanding 11-1 lead in the opening set and did not let up. The Blue Devils then came from behind to win three straight sets.
In the third and fourth sets, SFU traded blows with CCSU all the way until the end, as both ended 22-25.
Senior outside hitter
Amanda Zahumensky (Sarver, Pa./Freeport Area) had an impressive 16 kills for SFU in the second match, senior middle hitter
Lauren Wingard (York, Pa./Dallastown Area) also contributed with 15 kills of her own. Wingard was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Sophomore middle hitter
Kayla Jeckell (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) added 10 kills in the match.
The Red Flash will play in the Radford Invitational next Friday and Saturday. SFU will play Radford on Friday at 6 p.m., Murray State at 3 p.m. on Saturday, and The Citadel at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
