Deflected shot pushes Bonnies past Flash in overtime

BOX SCORE ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. (Sept. 16, 2012) – The Saint Francis University men's soccer team fell on the road 1-0 Sunday afternoon, after a deflected shot gave St. Bonaventure a home opening win in the first overtime.

With the loss, the Red Flash fall to 2-2-2 on the season, while the Bonnies pick up their first win of the year. Midway through the first overtime period, the own goal came off of a set kick from SBU's Brad Vanino. The Bonnies had worked their way into Red Flash territory and drew a foul to set up the free kick. Vanino delivered a shot from outside the box that deflected off of an SFU defender and trickled past a diving Daniel Valcicak (Herndon, Va./Gonzaga College).

Up to that point in the contest, St. Bonaventure continually put pressure on Saint Francis and starting keeper Valcicak. The Bonnies doubled the Red Flash shot total, 20-10, and registered half of their total shots on net, most of them coming in the second half. St. Bonaventure's Vanino recorded a game-high eight shots. For SFU, Nick Kolarac (Pittsburgh, Pa./West Allegheny) led the offensive attack with three total shots.

Saint Francis continues its long road trip this Friday with a 7 p.m. night contest at Niagara.
