BOX SCORE BROOKLYN, N.Y. – (Oct. 20, 2013) The Red Flash suffer their first Northeast Conference loss 1-0 to LIU Brooklyn Sunday afternoon. LIU (5-7-1; 2-1-0) handed Saint Francis (9-3-3; 2-1-1) their first loss of October, their last defeat coming six games ago to the hands of Duquesne.
Saint Francis held a clear advantage in the first period dominating the shot column 6-to-4 and tripling the Blackbirds in corner kicks 10-to-3. The Red and White could not connect on goal, misfiring several times on goal to enter halftime scoreless.
"Today was disappointing because we wasted an opportunity to get three points," said Head Coach
Michael Casper. I give LIU credit for finding a goal and making the game difficult for us, but if we were better in the final third, today might have been different."
Seven minutes into the second period the Blackbirds got on the board off a strike by Nahuel Medina. Medina scored the eventually game-winner off a stray rebound. Saint Francis played catch-up with LIU the rest of the game, not finding the equalizer despite a valiant effort.
Senior
Nick Kolarac (Pittsburgh, Pa./West Allegheny) led the Saint Francis attack with five shots, one coming on goal.
Bryan Causey (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) had two shots on goal, tallying four shots in the match.
Stefan Sjekloca (Belgrade, Serbia/Fryeburg Academy) made the most of his time off the bench recording a shot on goal for the Red Flash.
Daniel Valcicak (Herndon, Va./Gonzaga College) collected four saves on the day, as did his opposition for the Blackbirds.
SFU outshot LIU 14-to-9 on the day, while the Blackbirds committed 15 fouls to Saint Francis's nine.
"This is a very difficult place to come and play, but if we want to achieve our goals this season we have to be better each time we step out onto the field, said Coach Casper. "We will learn from it, use it as motivation and be better next weekend."
Saint Francis returns from New York to host Sacred Heart next Sunday at 1 p.m.
