BOX SCORE LORETTO, Pa. – (Oct. 6, 2013) In front of a lively home crowd at the DeGol Arena the Saint Francis U women's volleyball team (2-15; 2-2) claimed its second Northeast Conference victory over the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers (5-17; 1-3).
The Terriers jumped to a quick 8-3 lead, but junior
Alanna Blenkarn (Pickering, Ontario, Canada/Pickering) began a Red Flash charge that gave the Frankies a 10-9 lead. Battling back-and-forth over the next several points, SFU managed a 19-17 lead forcing a Terriers timeout. Following the timeout St. Francis Brooklyn struggled to regain the lead as the Red Flash ended the match 25-22.
Differing from the first set, the Frankies built a comfortable 18-12 lead, but following a 12-6 run by SFB the set became knotted up 24-24 favoring the Terriers. The two teams would exchange set points until Saint Francis Brooklyn forced back-to-back attacking errors on
Breanna Opera (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster ), to win the set 28-26.
The Red Flash made quick work of the Terriers, forcing coach Acoba to use both timeouts on SFU's 12-5 opening threat. Maintaining their momentum after the consecutive SFB timeouts, the Red Flash claimed a 25-17 third set triumph.
The fourth and final set mirrored the third set as the Red and White cruised out to a 13-3 lead, once again forcing coach Acoba to use both of his timeouts in the early stages of the set. The Red and White claimed a 25-14 victory to clinch the match.
SFU improves to 2-2 in Northeast conference play after defeating the Terriers.
Kayla Jeckell (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) posted a team-high and season-high kills with 19 along with 11 digs and three service aces.
Hannah Kutny (Clifton Park, N.Y./Catholic Central) also turned in 11 digs, while besting her individual high in kills with 18.
Blenkarn lead all Red Flash with 53 assists as libero
Breanna Kochinsky (Nicktown, Pa./Northern Cambria) turned in a team-best 26 digs.
As a team, SFU outmatched SFB in the major stat columns, posting a .206 attacking percentage marking their second best performance on the year.
Saint Francis returns to action Saturday with a 5 p.m. matchup against the Bryant Bulldogs.
