Men's tennis overcomes forfeits, Saint Peter's

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (Feb. 17, 2013) – The Saint Francis U men's tennis team pulled off an incredible 4-1 win over Saint Peter's this Sunday at the Saint Peter's Tennis Center. Already down two points due to forfeit, the Red Flash clinched the four points in all but one position.

Forced to give up third doubles, SFU secured the doubles point easily in top positions. At no. 1, Sergio Carvajal (Nueva Esparta, Venezuela/U.E. Fray Elias Maria Sendra) and Washi Gervais (Longueuil, Quebec/College Stanislas) dominated Peacocks Charlie Carrera and Alex Frakes 8-2 while Andres Rosa (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Colegio la Piedad) and Lawson Barter (Chicago, Ill./Loyola) put down Marko Knezevic and Luccas Coutinho 8-1.

“It's good to see the men sweep doubles,” said Flash coach Paul Tobin. “Giving up third doubles is not the kind of position you want to be in against any team. The men were highly confident and the doubles point was necessary for the team win.”

Saint Peter's didn't let up during singles play. The Red Flash managed to pull out the three points to secure the team win despite having to forfeit nos. 5 and 6 positions.  Gervais, back at the no. 1 spot, found himself struggling to gain ground against a fighting Peacock Charlie Carrera.

Gervais quickly found himself down 4-1 in the first set. Able to recoup, Gervais fought back to 4-4. Gervais managed to hold serve and break again finding himself up 6-5 to close the set. At 40-15, Gervais blew two set points and the game. Going into the tiebreaker, Gervais got an early jump at 3-0 and, from there, easily held serve closing the set. In the second set, Gervais was up 3-1 on serve but allowed a crafty Carrera to dominate the center. After a string of unforced errors and missed opportunities, Gervais found himself trailing 6-5. Carrera, on serve, closed out the set pushing a third. Gervais, on serve and trailing 3-2, broke back to take a 4-3 lead. Carrera never regained momentum dropping the third 6-4.

Rosa, playing no. 2 for SFU clinched the third point by taking down Peacock Frakes. Rosa, a clear favorite, started the set trailing 4-3 but easily dominated the next two games to lead 5-4. Rosa found another break to take the first set. Rosa once again found himself down a break in the second at 2-0, but turned things around quickly taking the next three games. By this time Rosa was in full control never losing his serve, able to close 6-4.

Barter was forced to move up two positions but clinched the win for SFU when Carvajal struggled with arm injuries let go of his match against Saint Peter's Marko Knezevic. Barter was easily in control of his match against Peacock Alva Valdiviezo, sweeping both sets easily 6-4, 6-2.

“This was a good win for the men,” said Tobin. “They all knew what needed to be done and they came though. Very proud of them. Not sure what to expect next week against our first conference match, hoping to have all my players back.”
