Flash Rout UMES to Earn First Win; Split Sunday’s Doubleheader

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 GREENSBORO, N.C. (Feb. 24, 2013) – On day one of the NC A&T Tournament, the Saint Francis U softball team split a doubleheader Sunday. SFU suffered a 10-4 loss to Canisius in game one, but were resilient in game two, downing Maryland Eastern Shore 11-4 to earn the team's first win of the young season.

In the morning game against Canisius (4-1), the Golden Griffins plated four runs in the bottom of the first inning. After scoring a run in the second, SFU tied things up in their next at-bat, getting three runs safely across in the top of the third. The Flash loaded the bases with two outs when Taylor Darneille (Fircrest, Wash./Wilson) put the ball in play and allowed for some shaky defense by Canisius to allow all three runs to score successfully.

The game remained tied at 4-4 until the bottom of the fifth when the Golden Griffins put up five insurance runs, and added one more in the sixth. Brooke Koch (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) (0-2) took the loss in game one after tossing six innings and allowing seven earned runs.

Game two fared much better for Saint Francis. SFU got on the board early after Sabrie Neeb (Front Royal, Va./Skyline) doubled home Chelsy Cosentino (New Kensington, Pa./Kiski Area) in the bottom of inning one. In their next at-bat, after back-to-back singles by Darneille and Brianna Garcia (Riverside, Calif./Arlington), Maggie Creciun (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) collected the team's first triple of the season, scoring both runners. Creciun then scored herself on a passed ball and put the Flash up 4-0.

The Hawks (3-2) kept things interesting, drawing the score to just a 5-4 deficit after four and a half innings played. Saint Francis turned on the insurance though, plating five runs alone in their half of the fifth. Cosentino led the inning off with a three-bagger to the right center field gap. Neeb came through in the clutch once more, sending out her first collegiate home run, a two-run shot to center field.

The Red Flash got three more in the inning, thanks to a RBI double from Misty Hammel (Oakville, Ontario/Holy Trinity), a RBI single by Creciun and an error on UMES.

After a few cold games offensively, the bats were rolling in game two. Team wise, the Flash collected 16 hits on the Hawks and six SFU student-athletes recorded a multi-hit game. Cosentino, Neeb and Creciun had monster games for Saint Francis. Cosentino went a perfect 3-for-3 on the day while Neeb hit 3-for-4 with four RBI and Creciun went 2-for-3 with three RBI.

Chelsea Rex (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) (1-0) was credited with the win after she threw five innings and surrendered just two earned runs. Rex also added in six strikeouts to her line. Ketarah DeVries (Forreston, Ill./Forreston) pitched two innings of relief work, allowing no runs.

Saint Francis continues the NC A&T Tournament Monday with two more contests, first a rematch with Canisius at 9 a.m. followed by a battle with tournament host North Carolina A&T in the afternoon.
