BOX SCORE 2 EMMITTSBURG, Md. (April 14, 2013) – Behind solid pitching from sophomore
Chelsea Rex (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola), the Saint Francis U softball team split a doubleheader at Mount St. Mary's on Sunday. SFU fell 5-2 in game one but pulled out a 4-1 victory in the second contest.
In the second inning of game one, the Red Flash (19-17, 2-4 NEC) used some small ball and heads up base running to take the early 1-0 lead. Two infield singles and a walk loaded the bases for
Brianna Garcia (Riverside, Calif./Arlington). Garcia hit a sharp ground ball to the second baseman who tagged
Maggie Creciun (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) out on the base path but Garcia legged out the hit that allowed the run to score. The Mount (12-26, 4-10 NEC) got even in the next half inning however on a double that fell in the right center field gap.
Offense was at a premium in the first game, as both teams were deadlocked at three hits apiece through four innings. In the Mount half of the fifth, back-to-back homeruns to left put the Mountaineers up 5-1.
The Flash continued to battle in the top of the sixth.
Taylor Parsons (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle) and
Karlie Miller (Wildomar, Calif./Temescal Canyon) collected consecutive hits to put runners at second and third with no outs. After a strikeout, Rex blooped a fly ball in fair territory in left that scored Parsons from third. The run production was halted however on a groundout and fly out that ended the SFU threat in the sixth.
Davina Kachnovitz (Bear, Del./Glasgow) led off the seventh by legging out an infield single but was left stranded on the base paths, allowing the Mount to secure a 5-2 win.
Ketarah DeVries (Forreston, Ill./Forreston) (13-11) suffered the loss in game one after throwing all six innings and allowing the five runs on seven hits.
As the second game of the afternoon got underway, SFU got a run across in the top of the first on a single to left by Miller. The Mount took advantage of back-to-back walks issued by Rex to draw even at one in the third inning.
In the fifth, Kachnovitz collected her team-leading 23
rd RBI of the season when she lined a single to right field that allowed Parsons to slide in safe at the plate.
Taylor Darneille (Fircrest, Wash./Wilson) then stepped in and placed an infield single towards short that brought in Kachnovitz and put SFU up 3-1.
The Mount put runners on the corners with just one out in their half of the sixth but Rex delivered a looking strikeout and a ground ball out that ended the threat.
Chelsy Cosentino (New Kensington, Pa./Kiski Area) led off the Flash half of the seventh with her team-best third triple of the season and was brought in on a deep sacrifice fly to center off the bat of Miller to bring the score to 4-1.
Rex (5-2) earned the win after one of her best pitching outings of the season. She tossed the complete game and gave up just the one run on six hits.
Saint Francis continues NEC action this Tuesday when the Robert Morris Colonials visit Loretto for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
