Men's Tennis ends season matches with tough loss to Siena

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (April 16, 2013) – The Saint Francis University men's tennis team finished off the season with an emotional 4-3 loss to Siena Sunday morning. Once again, the Red Flash competed with only five players due to injury. A reoccurring theme thought the season.

Already conceding third doubles, SFU had to pick up wins in both no. 1 and no. 2 doubles. With both teams splitting wins, Siena won the doubles point by default. Andres Rosa (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Colegio la Piedad) and Lawson Barter (Chicago, Ill./Loyola) lost an important break at 5-4 giving Siena's Ryan Schmitz and Eric Sumanaru the edge. Down 6-5, SFU struggled giving up another break and the match. Washi Gervais (Longueuil, Quebec/College Stanislas) and Juan Pardo (Bogota, Colombia/Colegio Andino) had no problem securing a win at no. 2 doubles against Dylan Roberts and Vik Kadaba, 8-3.

"I was confident that we could secure the doubles point even though we had to concede a spot," said Frankie coach Paul Tobin. "I certainly underestimated Siena and they pulled it out."

Going into singles, the Red Flash knew it had to pick up four points to win the match while Siena was looking for only two with the default at SFU no. 6 position.

Rosa found himself down 6-3 in the first, only to come back and take the next two sets 6-3, 6-1 against the Saints' Dylan Roberts. Chris Jimenez (Bayside, N.Y./St. Francis Preparatory) had an easy road to his 6-2, 6-4 victory over Sumanaru. The third win came from Pardo at no. 5, Pardo was leading 2-1 in the first against the Saints' Darren Reisch. Pardo got broken at 3-2 and at 5-3 closing the set 6-3. In the second set Pardo broke at 2-1 and quickly went up to 5-2. Adding another break, Pardo took the set 6-2. In a crucial third set, Pardo got broken in the first game and went down 4-3. Able to break and hold, Pardo was back up 5-4. Siena at 30-0, Pardo ripped two return winners tying it up at 30-30. That was all Pardo needed to take the next two points and the match.

Unfortunately, the two losses came from Barter at no. 3 and Gervais at no. 1.  Barter was down 4-2 in the first and fought back to 4-4 against Saint Alex Burbine. It wasn't enough as Barter, unable to hold and break downed 6-4. Barter came back strong in the second and quickly won 6-3 in less than 30 minutes. In a lopsided third set that could have determined the team win, Barter eventually lost 6-1.

With the deciding match on Gervais fell to Ryan Schmitz, clinching a win for the Saints.

"Probably one of the most difficult losses so far," said Tobin. "Washi had such a commanding lead. I know it was a very disappointing loss to everyone but these things happen in sports."
