Rex’s Walk-Off Single Lifts SFU to Split with Bucknell

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 LORETTO, Pa. (April 17, 2013) – A walk-off single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh off the bat of Chelsea Rex (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola), helped the Saint Francis U softball team to a doubleheader split with Bucknell on Wednesday. SFU dropped game one 4-3 but came back to win game two 5-4.

Bucknell (14-25) got on the board first in game one, scoring a pair of unearned runs in the first inning. Down 2-1 in the fourth, the Red Flash (20-20) managed a couple of scrappy runs of its own that allowed them to take a 3-2 lead. With Maggie Creciun (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) standing on second, a bunt by Taylor Parsons (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle) was fielded by Bucknell's catcher who made an errant throw into right field. Not only did Creciun score on the play but Parsons raced all the way around the base paths to score as well.

The Bison got one back however in the next half inning, tying the game at 3-3 on a single to right field. They eventually took the lead in the sixth when Mary Horton lined a bases loaded single up the middle. Bucknell held on in the seventh to claim the 4-3 win.

Rex got the start in game one and was dealt the loss (5-4) after throwing the first 5.1 innings. Ketarah DeVries (Forreston, Ill./Forreston) relieved Rex in the circle in the sixth and threw the rest of the 1.2 innings of play.

In game two Bucknell again jumped on the Flash in the first inning, plating three runs. Kristen Zahn connected on a two-run shot to right field in the frame. Slowly but surely SFU began to chip away at the Bison lead, getting a run in the third on a RBI single by Sabrie Neeb (Front Royal, Va./Skyline).

In the bottom of the fifth Parsons led off with her seventh double of the season. An infield single by Brianna Garcia (Riverside, Calif./Arlington) put runners at the corners with no outs. A wild pitch to the next batter allowed Parsons to score SFU's second run of the day and advanced Garcia into scoring position. A sacrifice bunt pushed Garcia to third and a single to right field by Chelsy Cosentino (New Kensington, Pa./Kiski Area) brought her in to tie the game at 3-3.

A Bucknell go-ahead run in the top of the sixth gave them the 4-3 advantage heading into SFU's final at-bats of the game. A one-out left center gap shot double by Neeb put the Flash in business in the seventh. Using a little two-out magic as they have done so many times this season, Kate Blattenberger (Martinsburg, Pa./Central) lined a game-tying double to the left field fence. Still with a runner in scoring position, Rex stepped in and launched the walk-off game winning single to left center, giving the Flash a 5-4 win.

DeVries picked up her 14th pitching victory of the season in game two, tossing seven innings with the four earned runs. DeVries' 14 wins this season ranks her tied for fourth in the Saint Francis single season record book. Additionally these are the most wins collected by a freshman SFU pitcher in program history.

Saint Francis continues its long home stand this weekend as Wagner comes to town for a Northeast Conference doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
