Flash women finish season with a win and make tennis history at SFU

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (April 16, 2013) – The Saint Francis U Red Flash women's tennis team completed its 2013 season with a 5-2 win over Siena Sunday at the Schenectady Tennis Complex. This is the 12th win this season for the Red Flash women posting its best record in the annals of history.

Doubles action seemed routine as all three teams won and secured the doubles point. Alex Sachs (Parkland, Fla./Stoneman Douglas) and Rafaela Panizza (Jundiai, Brazil/) took less than 30 minutes downing Siena's Jessica Macaluso and Cassie Braz 8-1. Lucy Jasso (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Instituto Potosino) and Shivani Patel (Leicestershire, England/Repton School) never let their lead slide as they defeated Carly Holloway and Allysa Singh 8-4. Camila Diaz (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Colegio La Piedad) and Danielle Gryckiewicz (Calgary, Alberta/Calgary Academy) saw some action against Brittany Filip and Maria Varano. Up 4-3, Sienna broke and held to lead 8-5 but SFU shot back with four games in a row to close out the set 8-5.

"The players are getting very comfortable in doubles and you can see all the hard work paying off," said SFU coach Paul Tobin. "Siena is a good team and I like what I saw out there."

The Red Flash women secured the additional three points in the nos. 1, 2, 4 and 5 positions. Tight scores came at no. 3 as Lucy Jasso (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Instituto Potosino) lost a contested match against Sienna Maria Varano.

In the first set tiebreaker, Jasso was down 5-1 but came back 5-5. Both players went back and forth holding serve until Jasso found the break at 12-11, Jasso fired a service winner closing the set 13-11. Varano came back in the second with three breaks leading 5-1, Jasso managed to scrap up three more games but by that time Varano served for the set. Jasso took an early lead in the third set tiebreaker but Varano came back tying things up at 5-5, both players held but Varano found a break at 6-6 to close out the set 8-6 and the match.

"What a great way to end a terrific season with two back to back wins," said Tobin. "Now we have to keep it going at NEC next week."
