WEST WINDSOR, Pa. (April 26, 2013) - The Saint Francis University men's tennis team closed out the NEC Championship weekend with a loss to No. 1 seeded Bryant in the Quarterfinals. The Red Flash had all line-up players, but it wasn't enough for Bryant, who went 7-0 in conference play during regular season.
SFU came up short in doubles as
Sergio Carvajal (Nueva Esparta, Venezuela/U.E. Fray Elias Maria Sendra) and
Washi Gervais (Longueuil, Quebec/College Stanislas) lost to Bulldogs all-conference team of Zachary Morris and Dana Parziale, 8-4. Both teams held serve, but Gervais got broken at 5-4, to trail 6-4. Bryant kept the momentum going closing out the set. The second point came from the No. 3 position.
Lawson Barter (Chicago, Ill./Loyola) and
Andres Rosa (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Colegio la Piedad) forced to end their match against Bryant's Ernesto Arguello and Vidith Hout, trailing 6-5, and on serve.
"Bryant came out strong and we had a slower start," SFU head coach Paul Tobin said. "No. 3 doubles was never in the match so we needed Nos. 1 and 2 to step up."
With three points left to secure the team win, Bryant won in the Nos. 1, 2 and 5 positions.
"This was a challenging year for the men," Tobin continued. "We lost two lineup players and suffered some major injuries that left us short handed. We held it together and closed out the season and championships well."
