BOX SCORE 2 HACKENSACK, N.J. (April 27, 2013) – The Saint Francis U softball team suffered a two-game sweep at the hands of Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday, falling 2-1 in both contests.
The Red Flash (22-25, 4-10 NEC) used some small ball in the top of the first in game one to take an early one-run lead on the Knights (21-19, 9-9 NEC).
Chelsy Cosentino (New Kensington, Pa./Kiski Area) drew a walk and advanced to third on a single by
Taylor Parsons (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle). On Parsons' steal attempt of second, Cosentino made a break for the plate and slid in safe for the game's first run.
FDU collected its second hit of the contest in the bottom of the fifth and put a runner in scoring position with just one out. Starting pitcher
Chelsea Rex (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) got an infield lineout and groundout though to end the Knights threat in the fifth.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, FDU clean-up batter Courtney Slye lined a solo homerun that just cleared the center field fence to tie the ballgame at 1-1 and force extra innings.
In the bottom of the eighth a leadoff double and SFU fielding error put runners on the corners with no outs for the Knights. A chopped groundball up the middle scored the game winning run from third for FDU.
The Red Flash collected just two hits in the ballgame while the Knights finished with seven. Rex pitched the 7.1 innings of play and was dealt the loss, dropping her pitching record to 6-7 on the year.
FDU's leadoff batter Madelaine Wilen curved a solo shot down the left field line in the first to give the Knights an early 1-0 lead in game two. In their next at-bat, back-to-back leadoff doubles lifted the Knights to a 2-0 advantage after two full innings.
In the top of the fifth,
Misty Hammel (Oakville, Ontario/Holy Trinity) and
Maggie Creciun (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) collected back-to-back hits to put runners on second and third with just one out. An errant throw to the plate on a squeeze bunt attempt scored Hammel and cut the FDU advantage to 2-1. Two consecutive swinging strikeouts however ended the Flash threat in the fifth.
SFU got a pair of two-out singles in the top of the seventh but a pop fly to the shortstop ended the game in favor of the Knights, 2-1.
Ketarah DeVries (Forreston, Ill./Forreston) dropped to 15-14 on the year despite allowing just the two earned runs and tying a season-high with nine strikeouts.
Saint Francis remains in New Jersey for a doubleheader at Monmouth on Sunday beginning at noon.
