BOX SCORE 2 BALTIMORE, Md. - (Sept. 13, 2013) The Saint Francis women's volleyball team dropped their first two games at the University of Maryland Baltimore County Tournament.
In the first match junior
Kayla Jeckell (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) recorded 12 kills and four digs totaling 13.5 points as the Red Flash fell to UMBC in three sets.
Freshman
Breanna Opera (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster ) recorded a team high 12 digs and setter
Alanna Blenkarn (Pickering, Ontario, Canada/Pickering) chipped in 26 assists along with eight digs.
UMBC (5-4) controlled the game over Saint Francis (0-8) winning in an hour and sixteen-minutes (19-25,15-25,14-25). Struggling to regulate the pace of the game the Red and White only had one lead during match.
In the second match SFU faced off against Howard University. The Red Flash (0-9) lost to Howard (7-3) in four sets following an intense effort by the Frankies (23-25,25-18,12-25,17-25).Â
The first set was up for grabs as the two teams swapped six lead changes and 11 ties. The Bison's picked up the set off an errand attack by Saint Francis outside hitter Jeckell. The second set matched the first sets intensity as the Red Flash picked up the win 25-18. After five lead changes and eight ties the Red and White won the set on a 7-1 run.
The Bison shut down Saint Francis in the final two sets 25-12, 25-17.
Hannah Kutny (Clifton Park, N.Y./Catholic Central) and Jeckell both registered nine kills for the Red Flash. Kochinsky finished the match with 13 digs respectively.
The women's volleyball team faces Coppin State tomorrow at 10 a.m. to end the UMBC tournament.
