BOX SCORE 2 LORETTO, Pa. - (Sept. 21, 2013) The Saint Francis U women's volleyball team welcomed the Akron Zips and the Youngstown Penguins to the Red Flash Invitational.
The Red Flash (0-11) faced the University of Akron (6-4) in the first match falling to the Zips 3-1 (16-25,28-30,25-23,25-17).Â
Sophomore
Hannah Kutny (Clifton Park, N.Y./Catholic Central) had a season best performance smashing 17 kills, besting her 16 kill showing against Youngstown State at the YSU Invite. Senior
Breanna Kochinsky (Nicktown, Pa./Northern Cambria) nearly matched her season best in digs gathering 23; she was followed closely by
Kayla Jeckell (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) and Kutny both marking 12. Outside-hitter
Alanna Blenkarn (Pickering, Ontario, Canada/Pickering) led the Red and White with 35 assists.
SFU failed to keep up with the Zips rallies in the first set falling 25-16. The second set totaled 26 ties and 11 lead changes as Akron edged out Saint Francis 30-28 on Karley Kusan's spike giving the Zips a 2-0 lead. The Red Flash claimed the third set after a late rally by the Frankies that narrowed the Zips lead to 2-1. After maintaining an eight point margin throughout the fourth set, Akron cruised to a 25-17 victory.
The second contest featured the Akron Zips (6-5) and the Youngstown State Penguins (5-7). The Penguins knocked off the exhausted Zips in four sets (25-10,25-12,27-25,28-26).
The final game of the Red Flash Invitational matched up Youngstown State (6-7) against Saint Francis U (0-12) for the second time this season.
Youngstown State blanked the Red and White 3-0 grabbing two wins on the day. The Penguins controlled the first set winning 25-19 under Alexis Egler's strong performance.  The second and third sets went down to the wire as Youngstown State claimed both sets 25-22 and 25-23, to win the match.
Kutny led the Red Flash in the kill and dig columns stating 14 kills and 13 digs. Jeckell and Kochinsky both record double digits in digs tallying 22. Senior
Logan Meinert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) recorded 29 assists for the Red and White.
Saint Francis returns to action tomorrow at 1 p.m. in the Stokes center to face Eastern Kentucky.
