Complete Game Notes
Quarterback Club: The Red Flash will start the season with a two-quarterback system, going with a pair of redshirt freshmen.
Capri Thompson (Clairton, Pa./Clairton) and
Max Ward (Steelton, Pa./Middletown) will split time against Georgia Southern.
Harbridge is Back: After missing the entire 2012 season due to a knee injury suffered in the preseason, redshirt senior
Kyle Harbridge (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) returns to the Red Flash backfield with a real chance of becoming the all-time leading rusher in school history. He currently sits with 2,507 yards, just 907 behind Todd Harris' record of 3,414 from 2003-06.
Records Were Offensive in 2012: Despite missing Harbridge, Saint Francis set numerous offensive records last season. The 2012 Red Flash offense found its way into the school record books as perhaps the most prolific group in school history. The team set records for most points scored (307), touchdowns (39), rushing yards (2,610) and rushing attempts (502).
Abeid Breaks Out: Sophomore running back
Anthony Abeid (Youngstown, Ohio/Youngstown Christian) will look to continue the successes from last season, a year in which he was named the NEC's Offensive Rookie of the Year. He rushed for 258 yards and two touchdowns while netting another 122 yards receiving with another touchdown.
Veterans on the Offensive Line: The Red Flash will start three returners along the offensive line. Senior left tackle and Second Team All-NEC selection
Thurston Kino (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou) joins senior right guard
Lloyd Hill (Steelton, Pa./Steelton-Highspire) and junior right tackle
Colin Gdula (Dunlo, Pa./Forest Hills) up front for Saint Francis. Joining them are junior
Brandon Bunting (Champion, Pa./Mount Pleasant Area) at left guard and true freshman
Michael Boyd (Honolulu, Hawaii/Farrington) at center.
Five Wins in 2012: The team's five wins last year marks the Red Flash's highest total since moving to Division I FCS.
Home is Where the Flash Is: The Red Flash will host six games at DeGol Field this season, marking the first time since 2006 with that many home contests.
Clairton Connection: The Red Flash boast four players from western Pennsylvania high school powerhouse Clairton, including starting quarterback
Capri Thompson (Clairton, Pa./Clairton) and starting linebacker
Bishop Neal (Clairton, Pa./Clairton). Also joining those two are redshirt freshman linebacker
Erik Walker (Clairton, Pa. /Clairton) and sophomore linebacker
Brandon Small (Clairton, Pa./Clairton). Clairton has won 64 consecutive games and four consecutive Pennsylvania Class A state championships. The winning streak is the longest in America. All four Red Flash players won at least one state title while in high school.
We've Seen You Before: The Red Flash returns 10 starters on defense, led by safety
Jake DeMedal (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington), a veteran defensive line and a returning corps of linebackers.
DeMedal Gear Solid: First Team All-NEC safety
Jake DeMedal (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) returns for his senior campaign in 2013.
Â
DeMedal led the Red Flash in tackles with 88 and forced a league-high three fumbles, while also recording four pass break ups and five tackles for loss. The strong safety registered eight or more tackles in six games and recorded 59 of his 88 tackles solo. DeMedal's 59 solo tackles gave him the 23rd best solo tackle per game average in the nation overall and sixth among defensive backs.
In the Crosshairs: That would be quarterbacks in the crosshairs when discussing senior defensive ends
Joe Laukaitis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St.Clair) and
Asalemo Fruean (Waipahu, Hawaii/Waipahu).
Laukaitis was fourth on the team in tackles with 62 with a team-best 16 tackles for loss. He also had a forced fumble against Albany. Fruean led the team with five quarterback hurries and registered a sack against Bryant. That game was one of three in which he recorded a season-high five tackles. He finished tied for eighth on the team with 32 tackles.
Return of the Linebackers: The Red Flash sport a fierce linebacking corps that returns all three starters. Junior
Bishop Neal (Clairton, Pa./Clairton) returns at outside linebacker after posting the second-most tackles on the team last year with 76. Neal had five tackles for loss, a sack, two interceptions and broke up five passes.
Â
Semo Sila (Honolulu, Hawaii /Farrington) (39 tackles, 3.5 TFL) and Max Ma'afala Maiava (38 tackles, 2.5 TFL) also return.
