FULL RESULTS GEORGE MASON
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – (1/21/13) The Saint Francis women's tennis team began the 2014 season in Annapolis Maryland. Saturday the Red Flash (0-1) fell to Navy (1-0), 7-0.
"The women battled hard against a very strong Navy team, said Head Coach
Rob Castille. "We came out a little nervous and intimidated in doubles, but were able to calm down in singles and play much better." "With the new format, I think we realized how important it is, especially in doubles, to get off to a fast start." "I was pleased with how the girls pulled it together and competed very well in singles."
Saint Francis claimed a loan win in the no. 2 doubles as Dani Gryckiewicz and
Alex Sachs (Parkland, Fla./Stoneman Douglas) defeated Logan Antill and Katie Porter of Navy, 6-4. Navy won doubles as they downed SFU 6-1 in no. 1 doubles and 6-0 in no. 3 doubles to take a 1-0 lead going into singles.
The Mids continued to roll as they shutdown the Frankies in singles claiming a 7-0 victory.
The Red Flash (1-1) women's tennis squad rebounded from Navy's setback Saturday by powering past George Mason (0-1), 5-1 claiming their first victory of the season.
"Against George Mason, the girls applied some of the things we learned against Navy and were able to get their first win of the year," said Coach Castille. I think it was an advantage we had one match under our belts and were playing a George Mason team that hadn't had a match yet."
Rafaela Panizza (Jundiai, Brazil/) claimed no. 1 singles for the Flash, 6-1, 6-1 besting Morgan Yang of George Mason.
Shivani Patel (Leicestershire, England/Repton School) followed suit by taking an early, 6-4 lead over Sofia Santa Maria of GM and closed out the match by ousting Maria, 6-3 to win the no. 3 singles.
In no. 4 singles
Alex Sachs (Parkland, Fla./Stoneman Douglas) made quick work of Marijke Boers, 6-3, 6-3 helping pace the Red and White on the afternoon. Gryckiewicz claimed a no. 5 singles win over Esu Erdenebat, 6-2, 7-6 clinching the match winning point for Saint Francis.
Brittini Jentz (Plano, Texas/Ursuline Academy of Dallas) fell early, 1-6 in no. 6 singles to Ashley DeLaney of George Mason before rallying back 6-3, 1-0 (5) to further SFU's margin of victory.
After claiming five of the six singles, doubles were not completed due to the court and time limitations.
"It's unfortunate that we were not able to finish doubles due to time and court limitations, but I was pleased with what I saw from everyone in singles, said Coach Castille. "We will look to build off of this as we get ready for a good St. Bonaventure team this weekend."
Saint Francis next heads to Olean N.Y. to face St. Bonaventure January 26.
