Flash Stifles Duquesne For Homecoming Win

BOX SCORE LORETTO, Pa. – Khairi Dickson (Cleveland, Ohio/Cleveland Central Catholic) rushed for 138 yards, Lance Geesey (Harrisburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) set a school record with four made field goals, and the Saint Francis defense shut down one of the better offenses in the nation at DeGol Field on Saturday as the Red Flash defeated Duquesne, 26-16, on Homecoming.

The defenses ruled the first half as both teams registered just a field goal in the opening 30 minutes. Neither team made much of a move in the first quarter. Duquesne outgained the Red Flash 39-8 in total yardage in the opening period. Lorenzo Jerome (Sunrise, Fla./J.P. Taravella) had four of his seven tackles in the first quarter.

Things opened up a bit in the second. Duquesne strung together a 10-play, 47-yard drive that culminated in an 18-yard Austin Crimmins field goal with 5:13 remaining in the half. The Flash responded in kind on the next possession, navigating 74 yards on 14 plays as it moved to the Duquesne 18-yard line. Freshman Marcus Bagley (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) had three carries for 32 yards on the drive, including a 23-yard burst to move the Flash from its own 26 to the 49 to account for SFU's longest play of the first half. Geesey banged through his first field goal of the day from 35 yards out as time expired in the half with the score tied, 3-3. Bagley finished with 46 yards on eight carries.

The Flash grabbed a 6-3 lead on a 25-yard Geesey field goal on a drive highlighted by a 42-yard Dickson run on the first play and a leaping grab by Anthony Abeid (Youngstown, Ohio/Youngstown Christian) to set the Flash up in the Dukes' red zone. Duquesne used a 10-play, 80-yard drive capped by a 26-yard pass from Ryan Egolf to Ryan Ho to give Duquesne the lead, 10-6, with 1:46 remaining in the third quarter. From that point forward, it was all Flash.

Duquesne came into the game ranked eighth in the nation and first in the NEC in passing offense, averaging 293.4 yards per game. The Flash held Egolf and the prolific attack to just 200 yards while forcing a pair of interceptions. Cody Reimers (Wilson, N.Y./Wilson Central) recorded one in the third quarter, and DaQuan Minter (Johnstown, Pa./Greater Johnstown) had the play of the game with 7:22 remaining in the fourth.

Geesey had just made his third field goal to cut the lead to 10-9, and Egolf's quick out pass on third-and-13 was intercepted by Minter and returned 28 yards for the score. It put the Flash ahead, 16-10.

After the Flash held Duquesne to a three-and-out on its next possession, SFU moved 39 yards to the Duquesne 26. Geesey nailed his fourth field goal of the game from 43 yards out to give the Flash a 19-10 lead and the school record for makes in a game. Geesey also owns the school record for field goals in a season with 13.

The SFU defense forced a turnover on downs on Duquesne's next possession. The Dukes entered the game as the top offense in the NEC, averaging 415.4 yards per game. The Red Flash defense held them to just 267.

Starting at the Duquesne 26, Dickson and Bagley each carried for four yards to set up a third-and-2 at the 18. Quarterback Zack Drayer (Hershey, Pa./Hershey ) scrambled up the middle and into the end zone to seal the victory with a 26-10 lead with 1:48 remaining. That score made the Flash 4-for-4 in the red zone for the day. SFU entered the game ranked second in the nation in red zone efficiency. Duquesne's defense came in as the seventh-best group in the nation in allowing points in the red zone at 64.5 percent.

Terrace Bourne (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. Dupont) led the Flash with eight tackles, one sack and 1.5 tackles for loss. Dickson now has 1,461 yards this season, just 13 yards behind Kyle Harbridge (Easton, Pa./Easton Area)'s 2011 campaign for second place on the school's single season list. He also has 2,022 career yards, moving past Ted Helsel's 2,015 in 1978-79 into fourth place on the all-time Saint Francis rushing list.

The Red Flash has a bye next weekend before traveling to Robert Morris on Nov. 15.
