ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Saint Francis U used a 14-2 run over the final six minutes of the first half to break open a tight game and roll to its most lopsided non-conference road win in nearly two decades, turning back Navy, 85-68, Saturday afternoon.
Ollie Jackson (Dallas, Texas/Pinkston ) led the Red Flash with a 20-point effort as SFU collected a third win in the month of November for just the second time in program history. The senior guard hit on 6 of 8 3-point attempts to set the pace for the Frankies, who converted at a season-high 65.4% (34 of 52) clip.
"Coming into the game, we knew we had to make open shots," said Flash coach
Rob Krimmel, who improved to 2-0 against Navy. "I thought Ollie really did a good job, especially early. Getting that first shot to fall is contagious. He did that and it took the pressure off of our guys."
In addition to Jackson, three more Flash –
Malik Harmon (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King) (15),
Ronnie Drinnon (Jamestown, Ohio/Greenview) (15) and
Earl Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) (12) – hit double digit scoring totals.
Navy, which shot 50% (30 of 60) from the field, was able to keep the pace with Saint Francis in the early going by erasing a 7-0 deficit and twice taking a one-point lead.
The Midshipmen kept the game within five points for most of the first half before Saint Francis took over the game with its decisive run to end the opening half. Drinnon scored eight of SFU's 14 points during the sequence.
Saint Francis didn't let up in the second half, expanding its edge to as many as 29 points, 63-34, by the 13:48 mark. It was only after Krimmel cleared his bench that Navy was able to chip into the Frankies' lead.
"That was a well-fought win," Krimmel said. "[Navy] coach [Ed] DeChellis does a great job, his guys play hard, they don't give up and they have some big kids that I thought we were able to take out of the game a little bit with our defense."
"All-in-all, I'm proud of the effort from our guys."
The Mids (2-5) were led by Brandon Venturini, who scored 13 points and was one of five Navy players with four rebounds.
Earl Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) grabbed a team-high seven boards for the Flash, while
Greg Brown (Odenton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) tied a career-high with eight assists.
The last time the Frankies won big on the road against an intersectional foe was Nov. 18, 1997 when they turned back Norfolk State, 70-45.
Saint Francis will remain on the road to take on Lehigh on Wednesday before welcoming UAlbany to Sweet Loretto on Saturday for Kevin Porter Day.
