Canisius Uses Late Run to Drop Red Flash in Loretto

LORETTO, Pa. (Nov. 30, 2014) – The Saint Francis University women's basketball team saw an 18-point lead slip away as Canisius scored 54 second half points and came back to win 87-74 inside DeGol Arena on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Flash (0-4) shot 42% (14-33) in the first half and 50% (8-16) from three-point land in the first half, but struggled offensively late in the second period. The Golden Griffins (1-3) shot 63% (17-27) in the second half and 80% (4-5) from beyond the arc, which aided their comeback.

"Canisius got into a rhythm in the second half, and while that happened we tightened up and started to miss shots," said third-year head coach Joe Haigh.

Saint Francis led by 18 points with 13:22 to play in the game, which was followed by a 42-11 run by Canisius over the remaining time.

"When you have a lead like that, it is a game you must come away with a win," Haigh continued.

Alexa Hayward (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) led all scorers with 28 points and added five assists and four steals, while Aisha Brock (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy) scored a season-high 17 points. Cydney Smith (Port Tobacco, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) played her first intercollegiate basketball game after finishing up with the SFU women's volleyball team last weekend. She finished with three points and three rebounds.

The Red Flash held a 43-33 lead at halftime after a 13-4 run over the final four minutes. Canisius used 26 bench points, compared to just 11 from SFU.

Saint Francis makes the trek to Tennessee on Wednesday to face the #4/5 ranked Lady Volunteers, tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
