BOX SCORE MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (Nov. 9, 2014) -- The Saint Francis U men's soccer team rewrote the history books Sunday afternoon claiming their 12th victory of the season, clinching the Northeast Conference regular season title, and giving them the right to host the NEC playoffs in Loretto, Pa. following their 4-0 thrashing of the Robert Morris Colonials.
"I thought we were excellent today," said head coach
Michael Casper. "The guys had the mindset that they weren't going to settle for anything other than a win and they went out and did it. Robert Morris is a good team with some very good attacking players so to keep a clean sheet is quite an accomplishment. I thought it was as good of a performance as we have seen this year and we are excited that it came in a game that clinched the regular season championship. I am really proud of the group, this is quite an accomplishment."
Senior forward
Ryan Byers (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) opened up the scoring on the Colonials in the 21st minute to give the Flash a 1-0 lead.
Conner Rezende (Davie, Fla. /University School at Nova Southeastern) was credited with the assist. Rezende dribbled the ball from the left wing and found Byers who found the bottom left corner. Byers goal was the eventual game-winner.
The Red Flash attack struck again in the 35th minute of the first half giving the Red and White a much-deserved second goal going into half time. Senior
Mitch Kavlick (Erie, Pa./Erie McDowell) scored his second career goal as a Red Flash defender off a ball from
Brendan McGhee (Pickering, Ontario, Canada/St. Mary's Catholic) and
Pablo Medina (Monterrey, Mexico/IMG Academies). McGhee and Medina made two quick passes before Kavlick slotted it past RMU keeper Brenden Alfery.
Saint Francis led the contest 2-0 at intermission.
Saint Francis continued to dominate the Colonials in the second half as the Rezende twins connected to give the Flash a 3-0 advantage. Conner played a perfectly timed ball splitting the defenders to find Calvin on the counter attack. Calvin was composed in his finish as he slipped it past the keeper, netting his second goal of the season.
Andres Vega (Managua, Nicaragua/Colegio Centro America) came off the bench to score the Flash's fourth and final goal of the game. Byers delivered a ball from the RMU end line; Vega headed home from six yards out.
Calvin Redzende led the Red Flash attack with six shots, two coming on goal. SFU outshot the Colonials 20-to-8 in the contest, holding a 5-to-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Red Flash defense and SFU keeper
Andrew Garcia (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional) earned their ninth shutout of the 2014 season. Garcia faced eight shots in the contest, one of the eight were on target.
"We will enjoy this tonight, but we know we have to continue to improve and get ready for next weekend," said coach Casper.
The Red Flash defense held the nationals leading scorer Neco Brett at bay Sunday afternoon. Brett managed three shots in the contest, none came on goal.
With 11 assists on the season Medina ranks second in the country.
The Red Flash will play LIU Brooklyn in the NEC Championship semifinals Friday Nov. 14 at the DeGol Field.
