JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (Dec. 13, 2014) – The Saint Francis University women's basketball team lost to Bowling Green, 76-62, in a home game held at the Cambria County War Memorial Arena in Johnstown, Pa.
The Red Flash (0-7) got 21 points from the nation's leading scorer in
Alexa Hayward (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk), who received a special basketball pregame honoring her as the program's new all-time leader in three-point field goals made. Hayward also added eight assists and a career-high four blocks in the contest against the Falcons (5-2).
Bowling Green received significant contributions from Deborah Hoekstra and Erica Donovan, who scored 22 and 20 points, respectively. The Falcons shot 44% (22-50) from the field and 50% (10-20) from downtown aided them in their victory.
"[Bowling Green] shot very well from three and it was frustrating for us anytime we went on a run they would stop it with a shot from beyond the arc," said SFU head coach
Joe Haigh.
Saint Francis scored the first basket of the game when freshman
Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) knocked down a three-pointer and once BG gained its first lead three minutes later SFU was never again in front. BG went on a 7-0 run towards the end of the opening half and pulled away for a 41-30 lead at halftime.
SFU cut it to five points when Hayward had back-to-back lay-ins to open the second frame, which forced a Falcons timeout. Out of the stoppage of play, Bowling Green extended its lead to as 17 in four minutes and never let the Flash back within single digits the rest of the way.
"BG slowed down the pace of play and stopped us from getting up the shots we want to take and the volume of them," Haigh continued.
Hope Phillips (Marlton, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep) tied a career-high with seven points, while Wynn finished with 14 points off four triples.
Aisha Brock (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy) added six points and five rebounds.
Saint Francis plays its final four non-conference games away from Loretto starting with Duquesne in Pittsburgh on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
