Football Adds Craig and Lewis to Coaching Staff

LORETTO, Pa. – The Saint Francis football team has announced the addition of two former alums to the coaching staff, announcing the addition of Michael Craig as defensive coordinator and Scott Lewis as linebackers coach.

Craig spent the past four seasons on Duquesne's staff, serving as linebackers coach before transitioning to the secondary last year. In his time with the Dukes, Craig helped engineer Northeast Conference co-championship squads in 2011 and 2013. Those two teams also finished ranked in the top-20 in total defense nationally, with the 2011 defense ranking first in the FCS against the pass. Craig also coached linebacker Dorian Bell to Third Team All-America honors in 2012.

A three-year captain of the Saint Francis football team, Craig's first coaching stop came as the Red Flash's linebackers coach from 2006-09.

"I'm extremely excited to return to Loretto," Craig said. "As an alum, I was not only impressed with the athletic facility upgrades, but most importantly the growth and leadership in all phases of the university in general and football program in particular.

"Coach Villarrial and his staff have done a tremendous job in recruiting and developing Division I football players. After competing against SFU for the last four years, I know how good this football team is and I cannot wait to meet the players to start developing relationships with them. Our goal is to win the Northeast Conference, and I am just excited for the opportunity to take part in that goal."

Lewis' time as a Saint Francis linebacker nearly coincided directly with Craig's time as the coach of that position. Lewis started all 44 games in his career and is the second on the all-time tackles list in FCS history. He also set SFU and Northeast Conference career records with 524 tackles. A four-year starter and three-year team captain, Lewis also earned All-American honors and was a four-time All-NEC selection. He was the ECAC and NEC Rookie of the Year in 2007 and followed that with a conference-record 142-tackle campaign in 2008.

"I am extremely humbled to be back at Saint Francis," Lewis said. "I want to take this opportunity to thank Coach Villarrial and Mr. Krimmel for this opportunity. Being a former player and alum, I look forward to bringing pride and a winning tradition to Saint Francis football."

Lewis spent the past three seasons as the linebackers coach at Eastern New Mexico. He helped lead the team to an 8-4 record and the Lone Star Conference championship in 2013, the school's first league title in 22 years and its first winning record in nine years.

Lewis' unit contributed to the Greyhounds' number one rush defense in the Lone Star Conference last season as the linebackers combined for 263 tackles, 27 TFLs, 9.5 sacks, five forced fumbles and four interceptions. Lewis also coached five All-Lone Star Conference performers during his stint at Eastern New Mexico, including all four linebackers from the 2013 team.
