Softball Completes Sweep of Robert Morris

BOX SCORE MOON TWP, Pa. – The Saint Francis softball team completed its two-game sweep of Robert Morris on Monday afternoon using a very tried-and-true formula for winning games: don't let the other team score. The Red Flash (17-7, 2-0) shut out the Colonials for the second straight day, this time with a 2-0 win.

Robert Morris will be happy to have Alexis Bower (Cogan Station, Pa./Williamsport Area) vacate its campus. After pitching four shutout innings yesterday, Bower went the distance in earning her second victory in as many days. She didn't face much trouble in giving up just five hits and a walk in her seven innings.

After beating Robert Morris (14-15, 0-2) yesterday for the first time since 2006, the Red Flash swept the season series with the Colonials for the first time since 2003. And those two wins give SFU a 2-0 conference start for the first time since 2002.

The Flash scored in the top of the first inning for the second straight day to give Bower all she would need with the help of two RMU fielding errors. Davina Kachnovitz (Bear, Del./Glasgow) led off the inning reaching on an error, and she scored two batters later on a tough fielding error on a play up the middle. Earned or not, it gave the Flash a 1-0 lead.

Robert Morris had two hits and a walk in the first inning, but a great defensive play eliminated the lead runner on a sacrifice bunt. After Aly Ramsaier (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View) tagged the bunter out, she fired to second where the runner had made a wide turn. Kachnovitz connected with Kindra Witthus (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) to tag the runner for a 1-6-5 double play.

The Colonials didn't have another runner reach second base in the game. Chelsy Cosentino (New Kensington, Pa./Kiski Area) threw out a potential base stealer in the second, and Bower worked around a leadoff baserunner in the fifth with a failed sacrifice bunt and a strikeout.

The insurance run came in the sixth. Bower reached on a throwing error to lead off the frame, and after a sacrifice bunt by Cosentino and a ground out, Taylor Parsons (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle) sliced a single to left center to bring her home.

Saint Francis had four hits on the day, and Kate Blattenberger (Martinsburg, Pa./Central) had two of them with singles in the second and the sixth. She also had a stolen base.

The Flash moves out of conference play for a doubleheader at Penn State on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. There was a slight change to this week's schedule. SFU announced that Thursday's doubleheader at Cleveland State will now begin at 1:00 p.m.
