Lehigh Edges Softball

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Samantha Thomas (Sterling, Va./Park View) went 3-for-3 and Blaire Lauthers (Doylesburg, Pa./Fannett-Metal) didn't allow an earned run in six innings of work, but the Saint Francis softball team lost the second game of a non-conference doubleheader at Lehigh on Sunday afternoon, 1-0. The Mountain Hawks took game one, 6-4.

After a complete game shutout on Saturday at Sacred Heart, Lauthers was sharp again on Sunday. The only run she allowed was unearned in the second inning after a thowing error on a fielder's choice attempt. Lauthers was able to cut down a potential run at the plate on a comebacker as Chelsy Cosentino (New Kensington, Pa./Kiski Area) applied the tag, but a two-out single through the left side put the Mountain Hawks on the board. Lauthers allowed just five hits and no walks in six innings.

The Flash offense came alive in the final three innings, notching six of the team's eight hits. Kindra Witthus (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) singled after two outs and that was followed by infield hits for Thomas and Maggie Creciun (Norristown, Pa./Norristown). But Lehigh was able to get the final out before the Flash could tie the score.

Creciun made a great play in the bottom of the inning from her shortstop position. She ranged to her right on a dying quail deep in the hole and made a diving grab.

Cosentino and Sabrie Neeb (Front Royal, Va./Skyline) each singled in the sixth, and Thomas got her third hit of the game with one out in the seventh, but SFU remained scoreless.

In game one, Creciun gave the Flash a 1-0 lead when she led off the fourth inning with a triple and scored on a wild pitch. Lehigh came back in the bottom half with a run of its own, but Creciun's diving stop to keep the ball in the infield with a runner at second prevented further damage.

Lehigh took the lead in the fifth with an unearned run and scored four more in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-1 lead into the Flash's final at-bat. Taylor Parsons (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle) walked and Neeb singled to start the frame before Lindsey Reid (Bear, Del./Caravel Academy)'s infield single loaded the bases with nobody out. Parsons and Neeb both scored on the same wild pitch, as the catcher's throw hit Parsons and skipped away to let Neeb come around from second base.

Reid scored on a groundout to make it 6-4 to complete the scoring.

Ethel Santai (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove Area) took the loss, but she kept Saint Francis in the game, allowing just four hits in her first five innings of work.

SFU finishes the regular season with two crucial NEC doubleheaders next weekend, beginning with Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
