LORETTO, Pa. – The final push for the Northeast Conference tournament takes place at Red Flash Field this weekend, with the Saint Francis softball team hosting Fairleigh Dickinson and Mount St. Mary's in conference doubleheaders. FDU enters on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and Mount St. Mary's begins at noon on Sunday. Both doubleheaders will be carried live on NEC Front Row and on the Red Flash flagship station, 1400 WWGE.
SENIOR DAYThe Red Flash will honor its two seniors, catcher
Chelsy Cosentino (New Kensington, Pa./Kiski Area) and shortstop
Davina Kachnovitz (Bear, Del./Glasgow), on Saturday prior to the Fairleigh Dickinson doubleheader. Cosentino leads the team with a .331 batting average while Kachnovitz is the NEC leader in runs scored per game, averaging nearly a run per game.
PLAYOFF PUSHThe 2014 season comes down to these final two doubleheaders to determine the participants in the NEC Tournament next week. Bryant and CCSU have clinched spots, but the final two berths are open. The Flash is currently tied for fifth, a game behind both Fairleigh Dickinson and LIU Brooklyn. The Flash and Mount St. Mary's each have .500 conference records.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEKFreshman pitcher
Blaire Lauthers (Doylesburg, Pa./Fannett-Metal) won the NEC Rookie of the Week award after not allowing an earned run in 17 1/3 innings of work last week. That week was highlighted by a complete-game, two-hit shutout victory at Sacred Heart.
RUNNIN' RED FLASHThe Red Flash broke the single season school record for stolen bases at Sacred Heart.
Taylor Parsons (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle) stole second in the first inning of game one to give the Flash 68 for the year. The 2009 team held the record previously with 67. The Flash leads the NEC in stolen bases, averaging over 1.5 per game.
SCOUTING FAIRLEIGH DICKINSONBehind two complete-game efforts from junior Megan Reiner and two home runs, four hits and four RBI from sophomore Madelaine Wilen in the home finale, the Fairleigh Dickinson softball team recorded a much-needed Northeast Conference sweep of Wagner on Sunday at the FDU Softball Field. The Knights won the opener, 5-2, before rallying for three runs in the sixth to take the nightcap, 3-2. With the sweep, FDU improves to 17-19 (7-5 NEC).
SCOUTING MOUNT ST. MARY'SThe Mount softball team took a pair of road losses at the hands of Central Connecticut State by scores of 3-2 and 2-0 on Sunday afternoon. Nicole Pagano pitched both games for the Mount, giving up just three earned runs in 13.2 innings of work.
