BOX SCORE LORETTO, Pa. (Aug. 17, 2014) – Saint Francis men's soccer team cruised past the University of Pittsburgh in Sunday's exhibition game, 2-0.
The Red Flash was on the board early, as
Brendan McGhee (Pickering, Ontario, Canada/St. Mary's Catholic) threaded a great ball to
Andres Vega (Managua, Nicaragua/Colegio Centro America). Vega took the ball in his stride and slotted home near post, past the out stretched hands of keeper Dan Lynd.
The Panthers out shot the Frankies 5-to-2 in the first half, failing to reach the back of the net. Saint Francis went into halftime, 1-0.
Sophomore
Matt Loughnane (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Trafford) extended the Saint Francis lead, finding the ball from freshman
Troye Kiernan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) on the top of the box. Loughnane's ball hit the underside of the bar and found the back of the Panther net in the 60th minute of the contest.
Andrew Garcia (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional) played between the sticks the first 60 minutes, collecting five saves.
Marcus Rojas (Fremont, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) replaced Garcia and completed the shutout for the Flash. The Red Flash defense limited the Panthers to five shots on goal.
Pittsburgh registered all four-corner kicks of the game. SFU recorded five saves to Pittsburgh's lone save.
Ryan Byers (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) and Loughnane both tallied two shots in the match.
Saint Francis returns to action Aug. 23 against Cleveland State in exhibition match.
