BOX SCORE LORETTO, Pa. (Sept. 19, 2014) – The Saint Francis U women's volleyball team defeated Morgan State University in the Red Flash Classic 3-1 (25-19, 29-31, 28-26, 25-12) at DeGol Arena Friday night, claiming their first home victory.
The Red Flash fell behind 11-7 early in the first set before using an 18-8 run to close it out for the early 1-0 set lead over the Bears.
Using the first set momentum Saint Francis U jumped out to a 17-11 lead, but Morgan State refused to go down 2-0. Fueled by junior setter Carmen Fernandez's 16 assists and junior outside hitter Evely Macedo's 10 digs, Morgan State battled through 11 ties and seven lead changes to take the second set 31-29.
The Flash were led by sophomore middle blocker
Sophie Murdock (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion )'s five kills, .556 attacking percentage, persevered through 11 ties to pull ahead 28-26 in the third set.
The Red Flash led the Bears 2-1 at the end of the third set.
Sophomore outside hitter
Breanna Opera (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster )'s set high six kills helped the Red Flash ease past the Bears in the fourth and final set 25-12.
The Red Flash are back in action Saturday for a double header at the DeGol Arena. They face George Mason (3-8) at 1 p.m. and Loyola (1-10) at 7 p.m.
