LORETTO, Pa. (Jan. 19, 2015) – Despite
Corissa Archer (Clermont, Fla./East Ridge) and
Hope Phillips (Marlton, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep) both setting career-highs in rebounding, Saint Francis U lost to St. Francis Brooklyn, 70-55, inside DeGol Arena on Monday evening.
Archer and Phillips each finished with 10 rebounds apiece and helped the Flash post 43 total rebounds, but were unable to hold a lead at any point against the Terriers.
Alexa Hayward (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) led SFU with 22 points and she was the lone player in double-figures for the Flash. SFBK saw four players reach double-figures, and was led by a 10 point, 18 rebound performance from junior guard Leah Fechko.
"[St. Francis Brooklyn] is a much better team than their record shows, you have to give them credit they were able to execute their game plan and they made shots tonight," said SFU head coach
Joe Haigh.
SFBK led early over SFU, before Hayward scored the first five Saint Francis U points. The Terriers extended their advantage to as much as 14 midway through half one until SFU cruised to a 15-2 run sparked by two consecutive triples from
Rochelle Reece (Ajax, Ontario, Canada/Pickering).
The surge got the Red Flash back within one at 23-22 with 6:48 to go in the first period. St. Francis Brooklyn then closed out the half on a 12-4 run and held the 35-26 advantage at the halftime break.
The Terriers scored the first eight points to start the second half and SFU was forced to take a timeout to stop the run. Phillips scored one of her three baskets out of the break, but then SFBK extended their lead to 18 at the 14:20 mark.
"I played my hardest game of the year and crashed the boards. We had to find a way to replace Shaq [Stokes] in the paint tonight," said the senior center, Phillips.
Saint Francis U then went on an impressive 10-0 run and looked like it was building momentum as
Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) knocked in two 3-pointers. SFU was able to narrow the gap to six points with 8:33 to play, but that was as close as it would get the remainder of the contest.
Archer finished with seven points, while Phillips had six. Reece finished with eight points, which is her fifth time reaching that total during her freshman season. She also earned her first start of her collegiate career tonight.
Cydney Smith (Port Tobacco, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) also had six rebounds off the bench for SFU.
Saint Francis hits the road next weekend for two contests, the first on Saturday at Mount St. Mary's (6-11, 4-2 NEC); tip-off is slated for 5 p.m.
