Flash Effort Spoiled in Overtime against The Mount

EMMITSBURG, Md. (Jan. 24, 2015) – It was an exciting contest until the very end inside Knott Arena, but Saint Francis U came up on the short end against Mount St. Mary's in overtime, 74-64, on Saturday evening.

What brought us to overtime was rather bizarre as the Red Flash had been leading a large percentage of the contest. The Flash trailed 56-54 before there was a tie-up underneath the basket where Corissa Archer (Clermont, Fla./East Ridge) committed a foul on The Mount's Jessica Harris.

Harris then picked up a technical foul allowing Alexa Hayward (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) to net a free throw followed by two from the charity stripe from the Mountaineers. With five seconds left Cydney Smith (Port Tobacco, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) tied up the game at 57 and it went to the extra period.

Archer poured in a career-high 18 points to go along with eight rebounds, while Aisha Brock (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy) scored 19 points. Smith finished with a career-high 10 rebounds for SFU. Hayward recorded her second double-double of the season as she had 11 points and 10 assists.

In overtime, the Red Flash was outscored 17-7 and surrendered 16 free throws in just one five minute period. SFU saw four different players foul out, three of which did so in extra time.

SFU carried a lead for the majority of the first half and they held their first advantage (4-2) after Archer made a lay-in off a feed from Hayward. Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) scored two of the first three baskets for the Flash.

SFU's largest lead came at the 15:58 mark of the first half after a basket from Samiah Bethel (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter's House Christian Academy) and it led, 11-5. Mount St. Mary's battled back and took another lead off one of its six three-pointers they connected on in half one. The teams traded possessions and baskets for a while before each offense started to slow down.

Brock knocked in her third triple of the first half with 2:04 to play and SFU led 29-28. Neither team scored again until The Mount's Jacqueline Brewer hit a half-court shot that rolled in and out twice before eventually falling and giving MSM a 31-29 halftime advantage.

Saint Francis quickly erased the halftime deficit and held a six-point advantage five minutes into the second half. SFU held a seven point lead at the midway point of the second period before MSM came back and eventually took its own lead with under a minute to play.

Saint Francis travels to Staten Island to face Wagner (4-14, 2-5 NEC) on Monday at 7 p.m. The Seahawks got the best of SFU in the NEC opener on Jan. 3 in Loretto as they won 76-60.
