Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Barry Beal

Wagner Outlasts Flash, 63-58

STATEN ISLAND, N,Y, - The Saint Francis men's basketball team forced a season-high 18 turnovers at Wagner on Thursday night, but the Seahawks pulled out a 63-58 victory over the Red Flash. Ollie Jackson (Dallas, Texas/Pinkston ) had 11 points to lead the Flash, his eighth double-digit scoring effort in nine games.

The Flash fought off a sluggish first half from the field, shooting just 32.1 percent from the floor while making three of 13 three pointers. Even with the slow scoring start, strong defensive play had the Flash down by just two points at the break, 26-24.

Wagner (6-12, 4-3) pushed its lead to seven on three separate occasions early in the second half, but the Flash never let the lead move beyond that point. Freshman Basil Thompson (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) scored six points off the bench for the Flash, and all of them came in a three-plus minute stretch in the second half. His last two baskets, both layups, came on successive possession to pull the Flash back to within a point at 43-42 with 11:04 to play. The six points are the most since his season high of nine at Navy in November. He added four rebounds and a block.

Ben Millaud-Meunier (Montreal, Quebec/Vanier) put the Flash ahead for the first time in the half on the next possession. That fueled a personal run for Millaud-Meunier in which he scored nine consecutive points for the Flash. His three-pointer with 9:41 to play put the Flash ahead, 47-45. After two Wagner free throws tied the score, Millaud-Meunier nailed another three from the right corner while being fouled. The four-point play made it 51-47 Flash with 9:06 left.

After six straight points from the Seahawks, Earl Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) completed a three-point play to put the Flash back on top, 54-53, with just over four minutes to play. Brown finished with nine points of 4-of-8 shooting. He also had two blocks, a steal and two assists.

For a team that just played two consecutive one-point games for the first time in 38 years, Thursday felt like just another chapter in the Red Flash's nail biter handbook. A layup by Corey Henson and a three from Marcus Burton put Wagner ahead by four with 2:16 to play, but Ronnie Drinnon (Jamestown, Ohio/Greenview) came right back with a layup on a feed from Greg Brown (Odenton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) to make it 58-56 Wagner with 1:46 to play.

Burton came back with another three pointer to make it 61-56, but Drinnon again followed with a layup off a sweet feed from Earl Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) to cut it back to a one-possession game with just under a minute to play. The Flash sent Burton to the line on the next possession, and he missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 15 seconds left. The Flash had the ball down three, and Earl Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) had a decent look at a three pointer, but it rattled out with just five seconds to play. Two free throws sealed the deal and rounded out the scoring.

Drinnon had nine points, five rebounds and two steals. Greg Brown (Odenton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) had seven points and three assists while Stephon Whyatt (Jersey City, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) had five points and a team-high four assists.

The Flash (10-8, 4-3) fell into a three-way tie for fourth place with Wagner and the team's next opponent, Mount St. Mary's. The Flash heads to the Mount on Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. tipoff.
